“I Miss School” is written by a child, for a child. In this heartwarming and honest story, kids will understand that their feelings about the pandemic are normal and it is perfectly acceptable to feel a range of emotions related to not going to in-person school. The book instills hope for kids that brighter days are ahead.

My thoughts on I Miss School

I Miss School by 6-year-old Ryan Reaves sums up the past year in the eyes of most young school children. The pandemic forced many students into at-home learning and lockdowns where they were isolated from friends and extended family.

The young author speaks in a voice that is relatable to other children. One concise sentence per page, along with delightful, bright illustrations, will capture a young reader’s attention. The repetitive nature of the sentences will help early readers identify the words more easily.

The story itself is cute, concise, and filled with optimism. I recommend this tale to all parents, daycares, schools & public libraries.

About Ryan Reaves

Ryan Reaves Author Profile image

Ryan Reaves was born in Brooklyn, New York entering the world as the youngest of four and the only girl. When she's not writing, she can be found wearing a princess tiara with a wrench in her hand helping her dad work on cars, pretending her house is a roller derby, or choreographing dances to the latest tunes.

Six-year-old Ryan Reaves began writing her debut story “I Miss School” at five years old after yearning to return to her brick-and-mortar school during the covid-19 pandemic. She wanted to write the book for other kids, so they knew they weren’t alone in their thoughts and feelings and that we are all in this together.

An Interview with the author (& her mother)

What is the last great book you read?
Keena Ford and the Secret Journal Mix-Up by Melissa Thompson. I liked that even though
Keena was scared, she was honest, and her friends still loved her.

If you could go back in time, where would you go?
Ancient Egypt. I want to see the pyramids be built, and I want to figure out a way to give them air
conditioners back then because I think it was hot while they worked.

Do you have a favorite dessert?
Vanilla. Everything vanilla: Vanilla cake, vanilla ice cream, vanilla cookies, vanilla whipped
cream. Just give me sweet vanilla, and I’m happy.

Where do you write?
I write in my living room at a desk facing the front of my house. I like to look out the front
windows and listen to music while I write. It helps me think.

How long have you been writing?
I think almost two years. I learned to write in kindergarten, and I just finished 1st grade, so that’s
two years. But I wrote, I Miss School, about 1 year ago. I just got bored of sitting in front of a
computer all the time. I want to see my friends and give them hugs and talk about our new dolls
and stuff. On the computer, we just get straight to schoolwork. So, I wanted to write down the
good things I remember about being in the school building.

What’s the most courageous thing you’ve ever done?
One time I saw some big boys that were like 12 or 10 picking on my neighbor, who was 6. They
took his shoes and wouldn't give them back. I took a deep breath and yelled at them to give his
shoes back, and they did it. Then they got on their bikes and went away. I took a deep breath
and then told my dad I was soooo scared. He told me he was proud of me, and I got the biggest
hug. I think I was brave to speak up for my friend.
