Having written numerous works of nonfiction, this is Lee Hudspeth’s debut book of poetry. Incandescent Visions explores the meaning of the human experience, as the author encourages his readers to ponder the universe and their place within it and to catalyze their own creative potential. From the sublime shores of the Mediterranean to the majestic expansiveness of deep space, this book contemplates nostalgia, perspective and the gift of love. Through five short yet powerful, thought-provoking chapters of contemporary poems—and a dash of elegant, evocative haiku—Hudspeth takes his readers on a journey across the inner landscape of struggle, triumph, self-realization, and imagination.

Author Interview:

Describe the differences, similarities and difficulties when writing a poetry book compared to Information Technology guidebooks.

Some years ago I was co-author of ten nonfiction books in the field of Information Technology. These books explained how to be productive with personal computers, Microsoft Windows and the three most popular Microsoft Office applications at the time: Word, Excel and Outlook. We wrote these books in a proudly irreverent style, in the sense of trying to explain hardware and software to people who simply wanted to get work done and not have to arm-wrestle with a stubborn, inflexible application or operating system. My co-authors and I did our explaining with a sense of humor, a sincere appreciation for the value of the reader’s time and respect for their intellect; that is, we tried to be an antidote to the Pick-Your-Topic for Dummies trend of that era. We used titles like The Underground Guide to Microsoft Office: Slightly Askew Advice from Two Integration Wizards, Excel 97 Annoyances, The Unofficial Guide to PCs and so forth.

The main similarity across these two very different genres resolves down to the word “genuine.” I strive to be genuine with my readers and to write in an honest way, whether it’s in the form of nonfiction prose, creative prose or poetry. That said, there are dramatic differences in the writing styles of a nonfiction “how to” guidebook and a poetry book. The guidebooks exist to explain a process and are very linear. My poems are nonlinear, indirect and mysterious (although not to the extent of being incomprehensible, I hope) because I want to evoke responses and experiences in my readers that allow them to see and feel something that profoundly affected me: a gesture, a moment in time framed by the swirl of emotions, or the particular and magical way a crescent moon hovers in the night sky. To engender this emotional/spiritual connection between myself and my readers through my poems requires the use of vocabulary, grammar, structure, rhythms, typography and yes, some rhyming, that is not found in a nonfiction guidebook.
