My thoughts on Inventive Weaving on a Little Loom by Syne Mitchell:

Inventive Weaving on a Little Loom by Syne Mitchell

This has been my go-to rigid-heddle weaving book for several years. The instructions are clear and concise. The photos are detailed and well-done. Inventive Weaving on a Little Loom covers so many varied topics. It’s not just simple weaving, but includes color theory, troubleshooting, techniques, and more in easy to understand language.

The book is not just for new weavers. While I was definitely a beginner when I first bought this book, I learned so much from reading it. The joy of Inventive Weaving is that as your skills grow, you can go back through the sections and learn even more.

The pages are slick and glossy on heavy paper, so the book holds up well to repeated use.

This is a book you will use for years to come. It’s well worth the price for the paperback.

Here is a list of the chapters so you can get a feel for how the book is organized. Each chapter goes into incredible detail to make sure you understand the techniques.

  • Chapter 1 Welcome to the Warp Side
  • Chapter 2 Get Set to Weave
  • Chapter 3 Get Your Weave Thing Going
  • Chapter 4 Color Theory in a Nutshell
  • Chapter 5 Slow & Fancy
  • Chapter 6 Fast & Fancy
  • Chapter 7 Textural Effects & “Wild” Yarns

The appendix includes even more information such as troubleshooting, loom maintenance, and suggested reading.

I can’t praise this book enough. Every weaver needs a copy of Inventive Weaving on a Little Loom in their library.

I talk a lot about rigid heddle weaving. This is a great post by Cheryl Moreo explaining rigid heddle weaving for you.

About Syne Mitchell

Syne Mitchell Author Photo

Syne Mitchell has been a storyteller since she was three and started writing fiction in second grade. She grew up reading science-fiction and fantasy, and it was with great honor and delight that her first professional fiction sale was the story “Tiger’s Eye” to Marion Zimmer Bradley for the Sword & Sorceress anthology #9.

An early entrant into college, Syne graduated with a degree in Business Administration at the age of 15 and went on to study physical oceanography and nuclear physics, ultimately graduating with a Master’s degree in solid-state physics. Although she’d completed the course work for a Ph.D., Syne decided that her true passion was writing and stepped away from science to pursue that dream.

Like many writers, Syne’s had an eclectic career. Highlights include selling beads at a jewelry shop, teaching high-school physics, writing developer documentation for various high-profile tech companies, publishing a weaving magazine and podcast, and as a product manager at Google. She is currently working as a self-employed artist and educator.

Along the way, she published five novels, a non-fiction book on weaving, and numerous articles and short stories.

When not working or writing, Syne spends time with her family, chases the cat around the house, gardens, weaves, and takes classes in anything she doesn’t know how to do.
