“Tell me why I’ve hurried back.”
“A mission to the Dorset coast. You leave in a week.”
Dougal frowned. “If I don’t leave for a week, why am I here now?”
Lucien hesitated the barest moment. “Because you need time to prepare with your partner.”
“My what?”
Voices in the hall interrupted further conversation because a moment later, Lucien’s butler announced the arrival of Lady Pickering and Miss Jessamine Goodfellow. Dougal was very familiar with Lady Pickering, but the other white woman was unknown to him. Taller than most ladies, Miss Goodfellow possessed vivid cobalt eyes that assessed him with a keen curiosity. Indeed, her unabashed attention could only mean one thing—that she was to be his partner.
Lady Pickering moved her vigilant gaze toward him. “I’m pleased you could arrive so quickly, Lord Fallin. I do apologize that you were called away at this time.”
Dougal inclined his head. “I am always eager to serve.”
“One of your best qualities.” Lady Pickering turned slightly toward the young lady. “Jessamine, this is Lord Fallin.” Lady Pickering then looked to Dougal. “Allow me to present Miss Jessamine Goodfellow. She will be your wife on this endeavor.”
“My what?” First, he had a partner, and now he had a wife?

My Thoughts on Irresistible
Irresistible is book six of The Phoenix Club series by Darcy Burke. While each book has recurring characters, each is also completely enjoyable as a standalone. There are no cliffhangers, every book has a satisfying ending. I have read several in this series and find each one well-written, entertaining, and compelling.
I quite enjoyed the diversity and acceptance in Irresistible. Historical Fiction is a favorite genre of mine. Darcy Burke’s Regency-era spy series is well-researched and hard to put down once you start reading.
Dougal and Jess are believable as the leads in this book. While Dougal is the black Scottish Lord grieving the loss of his white brother and chafing at becoming the heir, Jess is desperate for adventure on her way to becoming a spinster. This storyline alone would make for a fascinating tale, but when you add in the fact they are both spies for the British Home Office, it becomes highly intriguing.
They pretend to be a married couple to ferret out French agents using Dougal’s expertise and Jess’s cryptography skills. Before long, it’s hard to tell where the pretending ends and true romance begins.
Historical Fiction spy thriller fans will love this!

Any weird things you do when you’re alone?
Not really! I’m so boring, lol.
What is your favorite quote and why?
Continuing with the boring…I don’t have a favorite quote! I quote a lot of movies: Stripes, Fletch, Notting Hill, to name a few. There’s a great quote from the second season of Ted Lasso that I love and is a perfect romance quote:
“He’s fine. That’s it. Nothing wrong with that, most people are fine. But it’s not about him. It’s about why the f*** you think he deserves you. You deserve someone who makes you feel like you’ve been struck by f***ing lightning. Don’t you dare settle for fine.”
Who is your favorite author and why?
I don’t really have a single favorite author. Some of my favorite romance authors are Amanda Quick, Elizabeth Hoyt, and Jane Feather.
What, in your opinion, are the most important elements of good writing?
I love beautiful prose and clarity. Mostly, I adore well-written dialogue. It can be easy to write, but also challenging. I love scenes with deep POV.
Where did you get the idea for this book?
I got the idea for the entire series—a membership club where those aren’t included everywhere are invited. Inclusivity is so important, especially in these times, and I wanted to write stories celebrating those who felt isolated, faced challenges, or who aren’t a part of Society for whatever reason. The Phoenix Club would never have actually existed—allowing women members would have been completely unheard of—so it’s a bit of a fantasy wrapped up in history. 😉
