My thoughts on Jazmyne’s Big Emotions

Jazmyne's Big Emotions Pin Tom Tracy, author, Foster Children, Foster Care, Children's emotions, children's book

In Jazmyne’s Big Emotions by Tom Tracy, we meet Jazmyne, a little girl with a heart full of big feelings that often feel overwhelming. Through this beautifully illustrated story, we follow her journey to understand and manage emotions that sometimes get the best of her. What makes this book extra special is how it speaks to children navigating complex emotions, especially those in foster care or facing challenging life changes.

Tracy has done a fantastic job capturing the struggles kids like Jazmyne might experience, particularly foster children, who may feel a sense of uncertainty, frustration, or sadness as they transition through different homes and caregivers. Jazmyne’s story acknowledges these feelings and gives children the tools to recognize and validate them, which is so empowering.

The book’s tone is warm, understanding, and judgment-free, making it easy for kids to relate to Jazmyne and feel comforted by her journey. It also offers adults—whether foster parents, teachers, or family members—a gentle way to openly discuss big, overwhelming emotions with children in their care.

All in all, Jazmyne’s Big Emotions is a lovely resource that reminds kids they’re not alone in their feelings, and they can learn to manage them with patience and love.

I received a digital copy of the book from the author. This review is my honest, unbiased opinion.

About Tom Tracy

Tom Tracy Author Profile image

Tom Tracy has wanted to write children's stories for more than 30 years, yet just never found the right inspiration. As a result, that dream was never pursued, that is until his daughter's influence on him.

One day, he found himself mesmerized by the zestful nature of his daughter and niece's engagement of their family and their surrounding environment. That moment provided clarity of vision. The children in Tom's life would serve as the inspiration for a series of books that celebrate childhood and childhood discovery of and interaction with the world.

The main characters are based on Tom's oldest daughter and his niece, who serve as muses for Scoochie & Skiddles. It is an honor to tell their stories through the book series.

Tom is a NJ Licensed Clinical Social Worker and has worked with at-risk youth and individuals living with mental illness for most of his career.

Through his work, he has truly come to appreciate the value of sharing one's lived experience with others through personal narratives. Everyone has a story to tell from which someone else can benefit. It is his hope that telling his family's story will provide meaning and value to others.

As a gay man who did not come out until the age of 30, Tom also understands the importance of creating a mirror for others. Now more than ever, it is so important for people to be able to see themselves in print, in media, at work, and in everyday life. Everyone has a part to play in creating beacons for hope and acceptance. Scoochie & Skiddles have both been raised to be the embodiment of inclusivity and equity.

Tom lives in Southern New Jersey with his husband, Elliott, their two adopted daughters, two dogs, and a cat. In their family, Elliott is referred to as "Daddy," whereas Tom is referred to as "Odie." Odie is a take on the letters O and D, which stand for "Other Daddy."
