My Thoughts on Practice Makes Progress.

I recently had the pleasure of reading “Practice Makes Progress – An LGBT Family Friendly Kids Book about Building Self Confidence through Roller Skating” featuring Scoochie and Skiddles, by Tom Tracy, and I must say, it left a lasting impression on me.

Scoochie and Skiddles, two courageous cousins, embark on a roller skating journey that mirrors the excitement and apprehension we often feel when learning something new. Through their experiences, I was reminded once again of the timeless mantra: practice, practice, practice.

What truly sets this book apart is its inclusivity and representation. The Scoochie & Skiddles series, including “Practice Makes Progress,” showcases a diverse cast of characters, featuring interracial and same-gender parents. It’s heartwarming to see all families represented in the pages of a children’s book.

The vibrant illustrations throughout the book truly bring the story to life. Every page bursts with color and energy, captivating both young and older readers. Whether it’s being read aloud or enjoyed independently by early readers, the roller skating theme adds an extra layer of charm that will resonate with readers of all generations.

But it’s not just the roller skating theme that makes this book special; it’s the underlying messages that make it truly remarkable. “Practice Makes Progress” encourages children to step out of their comfort zones, try new things, and embrace the inevitable fear that accompanies new experiences. These empowering messages are woven seamlessly into the narrative, leaving a lasting impact on readers of all ages.

I wholeheartedly recommend “Practice Makes Progress” to parents, educators, and anyone seeking an uplifting and inclusive children’s book. It’s a delightful journey of self-discovery, wrapped in vibrant illustrations and filled with encouraging messages. So lace up your roller skates, grab a copy of this book, and join Scoochie and Skiddles on their exhilarating adventure. You won’t be disappointed.

I may have received a copy of the book from the author, publisher, or tour company. Unless otherwise noted, it is from my personal library or Kindle Unlimited.

This review is my honest, unbiased opinion.

About Tom Tracy

Tom Tracy Author Profile image

Tom Tracy has wanted to write children's stories for more than 30 years, yet just never found the right inspiration. As a result, that dream was never pursued, that is until his daughter's influence on him.

One day, he found himself mesmerized by the zestful nature of his daughter and niece's engagement of their family and their surrounding environment. That moment provided clarity of vision. The children in Tom's life would serve as the inspiration for a series of books that celebrate childhood and childhood discovery of and interaction with the world.

The main characters are based on Tom's oldest daughter and his niece, who serve as muses for Scoochie & Skiddles. It is an honor to tell their stories through the book series.

Tom is a NJ Licensed Clinical Social Worker and has worked with at-risk youth and individuals living with mental illness for most of his career.

Through his work, he has truly come to appreciate the value of sharing one's lived experience with others through personal narratives. Everyone has a story to tell from which someone else can benefit. It is his hope that telling his family's story will provide meaning and value to others.

As a gay man who did not come out until the age of 30, Tom also understands the importance of creating a mirror for others. Now more than ever, it is so important for people to be able to see themselves in print, in media, at work, and in everyday life. Everyone has a part to play in creating beacons for hope and acceptance. Scoochie & Skiddles have both been raised to be the embodiment of inclusivity and equity.

Tom lives in Southern New Jersey with his husband, Elliott, their two adopted daughters, two dogs, and a cat. In their family, Elliott is referred to as "Daddy," whereas Tom is referred to as "Odie." Odie is a take on the letters O and D, which stand for "Other Daddy."
