My thoughts on Kalorama Road
Kalorama Road is the first novel I have read by author E. Denise Billups. I can now say I’m a fan. She created distinct characters, intriguing plot lines, and beautifully described settings. The story had enough twists & turns to keep you guessing about the guilty party until the very end.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It only took a few chapters to draw me into the story. The suspense was just enough to keep me reading late into the night. I needed to know what happened to Allison that fateful night on Kalorama Road. How were all these crimes and mysteries related? Were my favorite characters good or bad? I liked how Ms. Billups tied everything together by the end of the book.
I love the gems of wisdom from Grandma Blu. We all need a Grandma Blu to look after us. If you enjoy searching for the underlying meaning in the author’s words, you will find many thought-provoking bits throughout Kalorama Road. If you are in the mood to get carried away by a riveting thriller without worrying about any underlying messages, the story works equally well as a suspenseful mystery with a hint of paranormal. Whatever you are looking for in this book, Ms. Billups has you covered.
I don’t believe you will be disappointed if you pick up a copy of Kalorama Road. It’s entertaining, mesmerizing, and well worth your reading time.

Interview with E. Denise Billups, author of Kalorama Road
How long have you been writing?
I’ve been an avid reader since I was a child which inspired me to write short stories as a teenager. After leaving a career in finance in 2013, I wrote my first novel, By Chance, and have written nonstop and completed two more novels—Chasing Victoria, Kalorama Road, and three paranormal short stories. Currently, I’m working on a Historical Paranormal piece set in my favorite area, The Finger Lakes Region, upstate New York. I hope to finish this novel by the winter of 2019.
What inspired you to write in this genre?
I consider myself a multi-genre writer, but I’ve always had a fascination with psychological and paranormal thrillers. My inspiration comes from years of reading, thriller, mystery, paranormal, and magical realism novels. There are many authors who’ve influenced my style, to name a few: Alice Walker, Anne Rice, Stephen King, Alfred Hitchcock, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Edgar Allen Poe, Agatha Christie, Alice Hoffman, Lee Childs, and the list continues.
Which genre would you belong in if your life story was fictionalized?
Wow! Well, most definitely Historical Fiction, as my ancestry is deeply rooted in the south—Alabama’s antebellum history. Although I was born many years later, this history will always be a part of my family’s past. Steeped in mysticism, folklore, and superstitions, I’ve carried this aspect of the south into my writing.
I left Alabama at the age of nine and have lived in New York City most of my life. I’ve traveled a bit and reached many physical and mental challenges (completing several marathons, achieving my MBA, and one course away from my PhD.) My path has been an adventure. So, if my life was fictionalized, it would encompass several genres—Historical Fiction, Thriller/Suspense, Adventure, and Contemporary Fiction, hmm, even paranormal as I craft my ghostly characters.
Do you have a set writing schedule?
I write better at the crack of dawn when the world is quiet, and my thoughts are clearer. There’s something magical about dawn’s silence that inspires creativity. I write at least three to four hours every morning. But by afternoon, the creative juices flow less, so I edit during those hours.
Do you need silence to write or can you work in any environment?
I hate to sound cliché, but silence is golden. Occasionally, I’ll listen to instrumental music for dramatic or suspenseful parts of a scene. Currently, I’m writing a Paranormal Historical piece that deals with precolonial Iroquois Confederacy. Listening to Native American flute music helps me capture the right aura of that time.
Were you an avid reader growing up?
If a scientist ever develops technology that extracts stored information from the brain, they’d pull an entire library from mine. I’ve read so much; I can’t remember all the authors and titles. Yes, I’ve been reading since I learned to write a complete sentence.
What is your go-to snack food and do you snack while writing?
Occasionally, I’ll nibble on almonds and mixed nuts, but snacking while writing makes me sluggish. I drink lots of green tea with a touch of vanilla soy milk. I’m big on matcha, ginger, and lemon teas.
Must you wear shoes to write?
I love this question! I usually wear flip-flops, so I guess there must be some cushion beneath my feet. But since I write indoors, wearing regular shoes would feel odd at my desk. I’d go barefoot occasionally, but mostly my feet are flip-flop clad.
Gina, thank you for having me as a guest on your wonderful blog!

In conclusion, I found this to be a highly enjoyable book. The paranormal aspects were not overwhelming nor totally unbelievable. The situations were very real and just frightening enough to grip you. I can honestly recommend Kalorama Road for fans of many genres. Let me know if you read it and what you think of it. I bet you will enjoy it.
