If you like Star Wars, Battlefield Earth, and Forever War, you’ll love Rijel 12: The Rise of New Australia!

The remote Intergalactic Penal Colony on the planet Rijel 12 is a very profitable enterprise. Its desolate surface is an uninhabitable wasteland relentlessly scorched by its sun, but inside the planet is a vast treasure trove of the most precious resources in the galaxy.

Prisoners sentenced to Rijel 12 know it’s a one-way ticket. It used to be a convict would serve their time and come home. That stopped a while ago. Inmates are forced to work the mines in wretched conditions, and the death rate is staggering. Luckily for the warden, new inmates arrive monthly to replenish the labor pool. Business has never been better.

From the darkness of their miserable existence, one prisoner decides to take a stand and begins to organize a resistance. Inmates rally to the cause and prepare for rebellion. Can the rag-tag rebels of ‘New Australia’ succeed in their quest for freedom or will the warden and the overpowering might of the Interplanetary Authority extinguish their only hope?

From new author, King Everett Medlin, comes an action-packed epic of hope, rebellion, and the quest for redemption.

My Rijel 12: The Rise of New Australia Review  Rijel 12: The Rise of New Australia Review & book cover

Rijel 12: The Rise of New Australia by King E. Medlin is a fantastic futuristic science fiction novel. If you are a fan of epic space adventures, Rijel 12 will thrill you. The depth of detail given in every moment of the story draws you into this riveting tale. The author is a master at world-building and storytelling. He manages to bring to life the different species from the six worlds so vividly you quickly forget they are mostly aliens. You experience their betrayal, despair, love, hope, and triumph as if you were right there on Rijel 12 with them.

You will find violence and blood in this story, however, never in a titillating way. It is always used to further the plot. I highly recommend Rijel 12: The Rise of New Australia. This book was out of my typical genre, but I am so glad I gave it a try. I’m anxiously awaiting the next story in this series, Rijel 12: The Return of Anarchy.

About King Medlin

King Everett Medlin has been writing since 2013 when he first developed the idea for Rijel 12. It was originally designed to be a SciFi series, with the objective of creating several short installments. Instead, he got a lucky break when Chandra Press from San Diego responded favorably to the original draft, deciding to publish it as a full-length novel. King lives in Denver, Colorado with his lovely wife Caroline and has two grown children. He’s a graduate of the University of Oklahoma where he played college Rugby and remains a diehard Sooners fan to this day. His specialties are Science Fiction and Mystery/Suspense novels, focusing on unusual stories with intriguing plot-lines and amazing characters.

Author Interview

How long have you been writing?

I started writing in 1994 … a book I was going to call Sex and Insurance. I poured my heart into it – unloaded everything within me. Then I burned out on the concept and set it down for a while; didn’t start again until 2013! By that point in my life, I’d remarried, and all I wanted to write about was romance.

It was like I was born to do this; but didn’t possess the confidence to stick with it twenty years before. When I started over it was as if the world opened up. Good that I waited: it was going to be a long, tough road getting to where I needed to be as a writer. Inspiration and the best of intentions had to last through the many bumps and detours I was about to face.

What inspired you to write in this genre?

Science Fiction allows me to write about current and historical events while caging them within a fictional plot full of metaphors. Because history’s patterns repeat themselves and to me, humans don’t really change from epoch to epoch (only technologies and cultural practices) it’s easy to alter a setting then express my opinions or observations while cloaked inside of a scintillating storyline.

SciFi also forces me to study modern theories for interstellar travel and space phenomena so that my books include advanced science. What’s fun about it is that this is an ever-moving target. Scientists offer opinions and argue what’s realistic based on their studies/studies done by colleagues. They publish findings, and next comes the firestorm – giving me plenty to utilize as I’m writing scenes for my books. Best of all they try to explain how things work using overly-simplified analogies so that “the rest of us” can understand what the heck they’re talking about.

Do you have a set writing schedule?

Yes. Have to. Each week I develop, write, and edit a new chapter for the current book I’m working on. I’ll stay late at the office and write new material until late; usually, have a pretty good handle on it by Friday. I’ll finish by Sunday night, writing all day Saturday and Sunday. Each day I endeavor to spend three hours combined; unless the publisher sends me a task to complete such as reviewing their edits for a finished book they’re about to launch.

What is your go-to snack food and do you snack while writing?

Absolutely. Sharp cheddar cheese cut into cubes. Hard-boiled eggs. Roasted almonds. Hummus with carrots.

Is there anything you would like my readers to know about Rijel 12: Rise of New Australia?

Rijel 12:  The Rise of New Australia is the story of a galactic penal colony where prisoners revolt and resort to piracy in order to survive, only to embrace a nobler goal. They seek to become a legitimate, recognized, independent planet within the Interplanetary Federation. Seeing themselves as wronged by a system which made them pay exponentially for their crimes, they look past this in order to achieve the ultimate prize:  mastery of their world as well as peaceful coexistence.

Rise of New Australia shows repeatedly how the universe must always find balance. For every action taken there is an accompanying reaction; whether moral or immoral and not necessarily immediate.

I loved writing this book and am very proud of it. The sequel will be out later this year. I’m writing it now, and it’s called Rijel 12:  The Return of Anarchy.
