There are a lot of unicorn-themed alphabet books out there in the ether. A short list includes:
- U is for Unicorn – A Touch and Feel Alphabet Board Book By Christie Hainsby
- Unicorn ABC Alphabet Worksheets by Avijit Dey
- A Unicorn’s Alphabet by April Hilland
- Unicorn ABC Book: ABC Book for Girls – A-Z Featuring Unicorns and Their Friends for Every Letter of the Alphabet by Magic Kingdom
- The Unicorn Alphabet by Marianna Mayer with illustrations by Michael Hague
- Unicorn! Teach Me the ALPHABET by Maria Yiangou
- The ABCs of Unicorns – A Learning Adventure through the Alphabet by Joyful Journey Journals
- BIG ABC Unicorn Coloring Book for Kids by Beth L. Wickstrum
Some of these books are adorable and cute, while others are absolutely gorgeous. They all teach the alphabet with unicorns and are mostly for pre-school or early elementary school kids.
None of the books listed above have metal horn unicorns presenting the magical elements of the periodic table in alphabetical order. The only book in existence that does is Magical Elements of the Periodic Table Presented Alphabetically By The Metal Horn Unicorns. It is a unique idea in that it combines fantasy unicorn elementals with real-world elements.
This middle-grade level alphabet book starts with the metal element aluminum, introduced by the unicorn Alumna and ends with the metal element zinc, introduced by the unicorn Dr. Zinko. Twenty-six elements from the periodic table are introduced by twenty-six unicorn elementals.
The book contains lots of information about metal elements like aluminum and zinc; and also about non-metal elements like fluorine, a diatomic gas (introduced by the unicorn Fleure), or krypton, a monatomic noble gas (introduced by the unicorn Krypto). There’s also a unicorn named Cornum with an alloy horn made of copper and zinc in the book.
A fun fact that you might not know is that not all letters of the alphabet have corresponding periodic table elements to represent. Did you know there is no element that starts with the letter J in the periodic table? However, the Dutch word for the halogen, iodine, does start with the letter J. That word is Jodium. Jodium is represented by the unicorn elemental, Jody.
There are two other alphabetical letters not represented in the periodic table. They are the letter Q and the letter W. For this book, Questa, the unicorn with the quicksilver horn, introduces the transition metal, mercury. The transition metal, tungsten, is known by its Latin name, Wolfram. An interesting fact about tungsten is that the letter W happens to be its scientific abbreviation in all periodic tables. Wolfie, the unicorn with the wolfram horn, introduces the wonders of that metal element to readers.
You will learn about these periodic table elements and many more in Magical Elements of the Periodic Table Presented Alphabetically by the Metal Horn Unicorns. The book and companion will help children better understand and remember key scientific information. This unique method is based on fantasy-based characters, encouraging kids to engage their imaginations while learning about chemistry.
