In this bighearted book, the real story of a young boy with deafness in his ears is aided by his mother and teachers in navigating new school experiences.

Mickey is just like everyone else, except he wears cochlear implants and has to do things just a little differently than most.

This charming tale reminds us that we can all find happiness if we lean on and support each other.

My thoughts on Mickey on the Move by Michelle Wagner

This delightful children’s story is entertaining and educational at the same time. Mickey is just like all the other kids except he has cochlear implants to help him hear. He rides his bike, plays with his friends, and generally has a wonderful life.

While attending school, he runs into difficulties. With help from his mother and teachers, a few adaptations are made to improve his quality of school life.

The story is an upbeat representation of a child’s disability and how with perseverance, problems can be overcome.

Mickey’s deafness and life with cochlear implants are explained in terms even the youngest children can understand. There is an illustration of the implants, but I wish it had been labeled for better understanding. Perhaps some implants are completely internal, but it would have been nice to see the usual external part of the implant shown in a picture of Mickey.

Mickey on the Move should be in every home, library, and child-care center. I highly recommend this story for children and adults.
