Content Rating: PG-13 +M. This is a Christian Romance no sex. two hot kisses. Lots of trauma but a happy ending. There is a language warning: Chad’s debridement is painful, being a burn survivor is painful, and the story is also about sex trafficking.

A Flock of Birds
There were days before I wrote Mirrored Reflections that I really felt God had sent a flock of birds over my head to drop idea bombs like bird doo. That went on until I figured out He wanted me to write this story. It germinated in 2011 when I watched J.R Martinez dance with Karina Smirnoff on Dancing with the Stars. He is a burn survivor. The world watched as Karina turned his missing ear and scars into some very sexy dances. She opened my eyes to the world of burn survivors.
The ‘what if’ exploded. What if a burn survivor met up with a child who was kidnapped as a young girl and was raised to become a high-end prostitute who wanted out of servicing men to helping people heal. She becomes a nurse for Chad who is a burn survivor. Oh, at first, they are a mess.
So, I ended up researching human trafficking, burn survivors, burn units of hospitals, talking to the real Nurse Niki, and learning about trauma. Oddly enough, I realized my own trauma. I read books like as Annie Lobert /FALLEN and Lisa J Peck/SILENT CRIES, THE BODY KEEPS SCORE by Bessel Van Der Kolk, MD. ( and it really does keep score). I not only learned about myself, but I also learned about tip of the ice burg regarding the personal hells of PTSD and Complex trauma. I’m nosy by nature and got onto YouTube and listened to Dr. Diane Langberg a beautiful trauma therapist who has spent more then 30 years helping trauma survivors and a bit about service animals as Owen (so named by my granddaughter).
As Mirrored Reflections evolved, I kept learning more and more, shown more and more. I learned about Truckers against Trafficking. Phoenix Burn Society, what Dr. Langberg is sharing with other therapists wanting to help survivors. The birds wouldn’t stop!
Mirrored Reflections ended up being 93,000 words. I write normally books about that long but never in one month. Research included. I started writing Mirrored Reflections (or Beauty and the Beast – but who’s the beauty; who’s the beast) approximately, November 11, and wrote The End approximately Dec 12. The story wrote itself. Or God’s flock of birds did. But wow. It was like riding Disney’s rollercoaster Fire & Ice, getting off sick, swearing never to get back on a rollercoaster, but grinning. It was fun to take these two kids from hell to hope and getting to blow up a sleek ,black jet in the process. (Did you know jet tires are filled with nitrogen and don’t blow up?)
I know Mirrored Reflections only touches the surface of these traumas, but I learned so much writing this story. I hope you learn as much or more reading it.
