My thoughts on Murder by a Hundred Cuts
After three long years, the notorious serial killer known as The Front Range Butcher finally faces justice. Simon Lions stands trial for the first-degree murders of five victims. Among those seeking justice is none other than private investigator Jarvis Mann.
But as the trial looms, complications arise. A key witness is found brutally murdered, followed by another grisly death. Gruesome pictures and ominous messages are sent to Jarvis ahead of his testimony, with threats targeting those he holds dear. The cycle of horror seems unending, pulling Jarvis deeper into the fray.
Driven by a relentless pursuit of the truth, Jarvis takes on the investigation of a new serial killer, carving his own legacy. Meanwhile, Simon sits in court, watching his bold and audacious defense unfold. This trial forces Jarvis to confront his own fortitude and moral convictions as he battles an enduring evil that refuses to die.
I’ve been a fan of R. Weir’s stories for a while now. Although I suspected this book might push me out of my comfort zone, I decided to dive in anyway. I was right—it did make me uncomfortable. But wow, what a story! I’m so glad I trusted Mr. Weir to take a bloody murder mystery and turn it into an unputdownable read.
Jarvis Mann is a fascinating character. He’s an everyman, yet one of a kind. His devotion to his friends and family is incredible, and the lengths he will go to protect them are astonishing. I should also mention his devotion to his car and motorcycle, which sometimes outweighs his concern for humans.
It’s challenging to discuss the details without giving away spoilers, but I will say this: if you’re on the fence, take a chance on this book. You won’t be disappointed. The story, with its twists and turns, will keep you mesmerized. For those who are a bit squeamish like me, the plot is gripping enough to keep you hooked, even if you need to gloss over a few gory details.
While Murder by a Hundred Cuts is the 10th Jarvis Mann tale, it will work as an intriguing stand-alone mystery. Yes, there are allusions to events from prior books, but the author does a nice job of filling you in without spoiling the other stories—just in case you want to go back and read the others, which I’m betting you will.
I read this book through Amazon’s Kindle Unlimited program.
This review is my honest, unbiased opinion.
