My thoughts on Old Loves Die Hard
Today I’m reviewing book two of the Mac Faraday series from Lauren Carr in audiobook form.
Seriously, I don’t know how this series of entertaining murder mysteries slipped by me until now. It’s incredible how quickly I became hooked on these books. I’ve read the first two and hope to squeeze in a few more before my review of Shadow of Murder (Book 14) is due in June.
Lauren Carr writes easy-to-read yet captivating mysteries to which everyone can relate. Mac Faraday is a lead character most of us can root for. He was a hard-working, underpaid detective who became a multi-millionaire overnight when he inherited his birth mother’s estate.
Now he owns a mansion complete with a lovely editor living in the cottage on his property, a five-star resort, and more conveniences than he can get used to. Most importantly for me, his estate came with my favorite character, Gnarley, the genius German Shepard. I do love a great dog in any story.
In Old Loves Die Hard, Mac’s ex-wife wants him back now that he is wealthy. He doesn’t even get the chance to rub her nose in the fact that she divorced him moments before he inherited everything before she and her ex-lover are murdered in his private penthouse at the Spencer Inn.
From this point on, the tale gets twisty and entertaining. There is simply no way for me to talk more about the plot without giving away spoilers. But I will say, this book is riveting and hard to put down. The mysteries, suspects, and red herrings, just keep coming. I was caught up in the mystery when I wasn’t laughing out loud at Gnarley’s antics.
I highly recommend Old Loves, Die Hard for all mystery, murder, and mayhem fans! Don’t miss it.
Since I read the audiobook format, I want to comment on that aspect. James C. Lewis narrates the book. His voice is soothing and puts inflections in all the right places. It took me a bit to get used to his voice on the female parts, but that is a minor issue for me and not the narrator’s fault.
This format is listed at approximately 7.5 hours if you listen at the regular rate. Those of you who increase the speed will naturally finish faster. I sampled bumping the speed up to 1.5 and 2.0 without losing any of the pleasure in the book. However, I find that I have a richer experience listening to the book at the original speed.
Once again, I highly recommend Old Loves Die Hard to all readers.
