On the Edge of Shattered: A Mother’s Experience of Discovering Freedom Through Sobriety by Kimberly Kearns | Spotlight, Giveaway (ends Dec 5, 2022)On the Edge of Shattered: A Mother's Experience of Discovering Freedom Through Sobriety by Kimberly Kearns
Published by Glass Spider Publishing on November 1, 2022
Genres: Non-fiction, Memoir, Self-help
Format: eBook, Paperback
Pages: 252

The true story of a wife and mother's descent into alcohol addiction—a harrowing and sometimes heartbreaking chronicle of habitual blackouts and unremembered nights—and her triumphant emergence into the light of recovery.

Before she stopped drinking for good, Kim was lying to herself and everyone she knew about her daily habit-sneaking morning sips of vodka behind her husband's back, emptying bottles of wine and hiding the evidence from her family, and convincing herself that nothing was wrong and everything was under control. Until she realized that it wasn't, and that her dishonesty could cost her everything she loved.

What would happen to her marriage if things continued in this way? And how could she be a mother to her young children if she remained trapped in this cycle of abuse?

Deciding she had to make a change, Kim threw herself into a new life of sobriety seven months into the Covid-19 pandemic. But only after severing the chains of bondage did she realize how much work there was still to do. Opening the doors to buried memories and past traumas was only the beginning. Throughout her journey to sobriety, Kim would come to terms with the secrets and lies told by her parents and loved ones, allowing her a clarity and freedom she never before thought possible.

The Family Cup by Kimberly Kearns

On Sunday afternoon, my family and I competed in a family golf tournament. My boys partnered up with their father, each paired separately with him against one another in the nine hole championship. I played with my daughter, and we competed in the three hole division. It had been several weeks since any of us had touched our golf clubs, probably since the summertime. We have been busy with school, fall sports and other activities, so we haven’t had much time to hit up the golf course these days.

But we wanted to play in the Family Cup, deciding it would be a nice outing for the five of us to do together on a beautiful fall day. So often our days are spent going in opposite directions to different fields, racing off to the next game. Just that morning some of us were at a rink in New Hampshire, while others were at a rink in Rhode Island.

Unfortunately, our lovely afternoon together did not go as planned. By the end of the first hole, I lost count of the amount of times I heard,“I suck!” or “I hate this sport!” come out of my family member’s mouths. Even my husband was complaining about his poor golf game. My boys were saying that dad was hitting the ball better for the other brother on purpose. Parker claimed she forgot how to swing the club and whiffed more than she made contact, frustrating both herself and her brothers. Our fun afternoon of family bonding took a sharp turn real fast, and we had eight more holes to go.

I realized it was on me to turn it all around. I could barely hit the ball off the tee, and normally my tee shots are the best part of my game. But I was determined to prove to my children that we would have fun no matter what. I wanted nothing more than to be home doing laundry, organizing the house and getting ready for the upcoming school week, instead of replacing divots and raking sand traps.

After a little while, I had to remind myself to stop thinking about what waited for me at home. Too often I forget to slow down. Just be. To stop and enjoy the moment. I had to ask myself, how often are the five of us with one another on a Sunday afternoon?

Even as Chase threw himself to the ground and had a meltdown over a terrible tee shot on the sixth hole, I felt joyful that we were there together in such a beautiful spot. I stared past him and admired the golden leaves on the trees in the distance. We are lucky. The crispness of the fall air reminded me that these days are fleeting. They go by too fast. I felt grateful to be there.

I am sober. I thought to myself.

I am present. I am not trying to hide and escape it all anymore behind a bottle of alcohol.
