My thoughts on Penniless Hearts
Penniless Hearts will capture your attention from the opening pages. Penny Himmel, a graphic artist, is looking for more excitement in her life beyond an unpleasant boss, a staid boyfriend, and taking care of her elderly father. This discontent propels her to jump at a chance to travel to Hawaii with a pilot she just met.
Hilarity, madcap adventures, and non-stop action ensue in this wild tale. Are some of the coincidences and storylines over-the-top? Yes, they are, but it certainly works in this book which is a speedy, entertaining story to read.
Penny jumps from discovering her dashing pilot is a slime-ball married wretch to meeting incredibly kind locals to landing in jail for picking up shells on a private beach. The poor girl careens from one catastrophe to the next, all while repeating the mantra from her deceased mother that “Everything will work out for the best.”
Along the way, there are volcano eruptions, helicopter crashes, drug deals gone bad, authentic Hawaiin culture, and zany adventures. Through it all, you just keep rooting for fate to give poor Penny a break.
There are many despicable characters throughout the story, but also so many unique, uplifting people to counter the baddies. I enjoy a book with characters that deserve the worst that life throws at them.
You know from the genre that everything will work out in the end, but I certainly had my doubts along the way. Penny is an endearing if somewhat naive protagonist. I can’t wait to read more about her.
If you love a book that mixes adventure with romance in a glorious tropical setting, then Penniless Hearts is perfect for you.
I read the book through the Kindle Unlimited program. This is my honest, unbiased opinion.

About Eve Gaal
Eve Gaal’s writing began with a toy typewriter she received at age four. Much later, she wrote poems for school publications and work related newsletters until landing a job writing ad copy and selling advertising space for major metropolitan and community newspapers.
Her first novel Penniless Hearts, is part adventure, part romance, and a gentle reminder to communicate. Eve has published poems, fiction stories and non-fiction, in various anthologies, some of which are: Anything Prose and Poetry Too, Open Doors-Fractured Fairy Tales, and Not Your Mother’s Book on Dogs and Travel. She followed up Penniless Hearts with Penniless Souls, also a travel adventure but set in the Nevada desert. A short faith-based novella titled, The Fifth Commandment came later and most recently, The Happy War, which is also a romantic travel adventure.
When not writing she likes swimming, reading and walking her Chihuahua.
