Starving, freezing, no clothes, and with no hope whatsoever. ’‘I still don’t understand why this is bothering you so much?’ Ernest said. Petra turned her head and stared out of the window.
A privileged woman who knows little of the real world gets thrown deep into the underbelly of the town of Fairacre. A town ruled by men.
A story of discovery and determination, Petra and the Sewer Rats is a tale of a young woman who dares disobey the town’s rules to save its unwanted orphans. Will Petra’s father, Ernest, still love her? Will her best friend, Nat, stay by her side? Or will they abandon her when she needs them most?

My thoughts on Petra and the Sewer Rats
Petra and the Sewer Rats provides the reader with an early look at how Petra evolved into a force upholding the homeless women of Fairacre. Listed as book 1.2 in the series, I think it can be read as a prequel, or in the order the author lists it. To avoid spoilers, you must read the books in the proper numbered order.
Petra comes from a family of wealth, but once she sees the plight of female children discarded by the patriarchy of Fairacre, she can not stand idly by and watch the atrocities.
I love a great novella that further explores characters from a novel. As we saw in Juno and the Lady, Petra was an early force in Juno’s life at the school, often protecting her from trouble. In this novella, we learn the background of how Petra became the woman determined to save the unwanted children called Sewer Rats.
Petra has the fortitude to stand up for the downtrodden against all odds. She and Valen have been given novellas to explain further some of the mysteries surrounding them in Juno and the Lady.
The story has a few more adult-ish themes, such as premarital sex, unwed pregnancy, and abortion. So I would put this at a young/new adult level rather than middle-grade, but I’m sure it depends on the reader’s maturity as to what they are comfortable with.
Fans of epic fantasy sagas will eat this series up. The world-building is exemplary, and while the story occasionally lacks a bit of continuity, it’s still an enjoyable book to read.
I received a copy of the book for the tour. This review is my honest, unbiased opinion.
