My thoughts on Valen and the Beasts

Valen and the Beast is a novella in the Acre Stories series. It is billed as book 1.1, and I read it after Juno and the Lady. It is actually a short prequel about some of the characters from Juno. As such, it can be read in any order. I can’t decide if it’s best to read them in the author’s preferred order or not, so I think if you have the opportunity to read them in order, that’s probably wise.

Valen is a big ole soft-hearted guy. He cares for children and the less fortunate. He despises the town’s practice of mistreating outsiders and women. This edition covers his meeting up with the Sewer Rats, falling in love, and helping to lead the rebellion.

We first saw his affinity for creating magical creatures in book one. This book gives us more details on that ability. We also learn of some of his downfalls, such as a quick temper and reacting with violence before he thinks situations through. But, his heart will win you over. I can’t wait to read the next novella, Petra and the Sewer Rats.

I am becoming quite a fan of this series and the writing style of G.J. Kemp.
