My thoughts on The Reaper’s Quota

When I agreed to review The Reaper’s Quota for the 2022 BBNYA winner’s tour, I had no idea that it would end up being one of my favorite reads of the year. The book follows Reaper #2497, who was known as Steve in his human life. Despite being good at extinguishing the lives of those he is assigned to, Steve struggles meeting his random quota of deaths. As a reaper, he was supposed to lose his human traits, but he maintains his empathy and only wants to take the lives of those who deserve it.

Steve’s slacker ways catch the attention of the “Big Boss,” and he is threatened with execution if he doesn’t meet his quota of random deaths for the month. The world that author Sarah McKnight creates is extraordinary, and her descriptive writing style captures the reader’s imagination. The reaper underworld is thought-provoking and highly entertaining, with unexpected moments of humor throughout, especially in Steve’s Random Death Reports.

The book ends with a fantastic cliff-hanger, and I was thrilled to discover that the sequel is already available. I highly recommend The Reaper’s Quota to fans of dark humor, satire, and creative storytelling. It’s a unique and captivating read that will leave you eagerly anticipating the next installment, “Chasing the Reaper.” Keep an eye out for The Reaper’s Quota on my “Best of the Year” list!

About Sarah McKnight

Sarah McKnight Author image

Sarah McKnight has been writing stories since she could pick up a pencil, and it often got her in trouble during math class.

After a brief stint teaching English to unruly middle schoolers in Japan, she decided she wasn’t going to put off her dream of becoming a writer any longer and set to work.

With several novels in the making, she hopes to tackle issues such as anxiety, depression, and letting go of the past - with a little humor sprinkled in, too.

A St. Louis native, she currently lives in Pennsylvania with her wonderful husband and three cats.

Wonderful review, Gina. This sounds like my kind of read.
Although I hate books that end on a cliffhanger, I might have to check The Reaper’s Quota out.
