My thoughts on Doctoroo & the Case of the Red Hot Hawaiians

Doctoroo & the Case of the Red Hot Hawaiians by

Doctoroo is back with her intrepid team to answer distress calls from around the world. Today they are jetting off to Hawaii, where a trio of dancing pigs have a mysterious illness.

Follow along with them while they search for clues to the cause. Could it be poisonous gas from a volcano or a banana spider bite, or an allergic reaction to the beautiful leis everyone is wearing?

Lucky for the dancers, Dr. Marsha determines it’s sunburn causing the problem. After she teaches everyone about the importance of wearing sunscreen, the performance is saved.

The bright, colorful illustrations make the book a joy to look at, while the words are simple enough for early self-readers to manage on their own.

I think everyone will love this latest entry in the Doctoroo series. I give it a well-earned five stars.

I received a copy of the book for the tour. This review is my honest, unbiased opinion.

I also reviewed Dr. Marsha and the Case of the Missing Hot Dogs and Marshmallows by Dr. Rachel B. Wellner and look forward to reviewing Who is Doctoroo: A Coloring Book very soon.

Why is it important to encourage kids to read?

By Rachel Wellner MD

The Doctoroo children’s book series is dedicated to teaching kids from pre-school to grade school about basic health issues and maintenance. I use the format of a mystery followed by a global trip Doctoroo and friends take to solve that mystery to enhance the excitement of “catching the culprit” and teaching kids the basic health lesson. My first two books are about good nutrition and hand hygiene respectively and this third book, Doctoroo and the Case of the Red Hot Hawaiians is about sun protection.

Why should kids be encouraged to read? Aside from the educational benefits, reading is critical for their brain development.

Reading boost their concentration and helps children learn how to focus. This in turn helps them do better in school and boosts their self-esteem.

Reading helps them improve their memories. To enjoy a story, you have to remember the characters and the details of the plot. This is a great exercise for the brain. Analyzing a story and discussing it also helps children learn critical thinking skills. And they enhance their imagination and may even start creating their own stories!

How can parents encourage their children to read? Read to them! Find stories that appeal to them and make reading a regular part of family life. Get children a library card and make going to the library a regular event.

I started writing the Doctoroo series to teach kids important health messages in a fun way with songs and stories. The act of reading itself also has multiple benefits for kids, including helping them lead more creative, balanced lives.
