Why Pain is Good by Rebecca Mann Kelly
Pain is good, it shows you where there is a problem. Everyone has pain, because everyone has problems.
Most people in the world go through life trying to minimize or ignore the pain in their hearts. Pain from childhood trauma, pain from relationships, pain from disappointment. In order to minimize pain, we frequently find ways to numb it. This can be done through things like drinking, taking medication, or even over-watching TV or losing ourselves in books (yes, unhealthy focus or obsession with reading can also be a form of numbing!). Unfortunately, living with unhealed pain will prevent us from achieving our potential, and in some cases can cause all kinds of physical and mental illness.
The healthiest people in the world are the ones who have had the courage to address their pain. Instead of pushing the pain away or numbing, these healthy ones face their pain by addressing it. Sometimes, it is best not to go through this process alone. Counselors, therapists, and close, trustworthy friends might be needed.
The most effective way of facing our pain is with God’s help. Years ago I heard God say, “Now it’s time for you to bring me all your hidden pain. And then I will teach you how to feel again.” And he showed me how to sit with him and give him my painful memories and experiences, and one by one he took the sting out of each one. Then he showed me how to begin to feel again after years of numbing. If God was mean or vindictive, I wouldn’t have been able to do it. But he is gentle and can be trusted. He would never crush a wounded heart or snuff out a low burning flame.
Pain is good – because it shows us places where we need to be healed so we can be whole. It’s not hard to start. Tell God what hurts. He will meet you there.
