Synopsis:
Shade’s life-altering vow to God leads to mysterious decisions that cause her to forfeit the man she loves.
Shade Doe believes her prayers are answered when she meets an older Christian man who offers her marriage and a name for her newborn child. Despite his overbearing nature, Shade delights in her new role as wife and mother. When her husband suddenly dies years later, she uncovers secrets from his past—secrets so profound they derail the lives of both her and her daughter.
After tragedy strikes, thirty-six-year-old Shade gains custody of her young grandson, Tyler, and moves to a small Michigan beach town where she becomes the owner of a successful bakery and café. Shade meets and falls in love with Tyler’s baseball coach, but their love for one another is doomed. Shade’s internal struggle to honor her vow to God, while denying her own desires, throws her on a path of painful redemption.

My Review of The Essence of Shade by Deborah Jean Miller
The Essence of Shade by Deborah Jean Miller is my newest must-read recommendation. It has all the requirements for a great story.
- Love: Love is prevalent throughout the book.
- Conflict: Every great story has multiple degrees of conflict.
- Mystery: Life is full of secrets just like this book. Many are inconsequential; some are huge and life-altering.
- Romance: You can’t go wrong with enduring, unrequited love.
- Food: I love the addition of deliciously described food. Recipes are available too!
- Shock: A bombshell from out of the blue just blew me away. I did not see that coming!
- Perfect ending: It doesn’t have to be happy ever after, but it needs to fit the book. This one does.
Add all this together, and you get a thought-provoking page-turner full of life, and it’s ups & downs, humor, great characters, delicious recipes, beautifully described settings, and so much more. The generational relationships are especially poignant in this book.
I can confidently recommend The Essence of Shade to readers of women’s fiction, faith-based fiction, and even cozy mysteries.

Interview with Deborah Jean Miller
Born and raised in southeast Michigan, Deborah retired from a long career in advertising before penning her first novel–a story that had been simmering in her brain for over fifteen years. When she is not writing, she can be found in the kitchen experimenting with new recipes. She continues to live in The Great Lakes State with her husband and enjoys traveling across the United States to visit family.
How long have you been writing?
2 years. I wrote my debut novel after retiring.
What inspired you to write in this genre?
This story has been in my mind for over 15 years. It’s a story about a woman’s Christian faith and her struggle to do the right thing. I’m working on my next book, but I don’t think it will be Christian fiction; however, it will have a Christian message.
In which genre does your life story belong?
Christian presently. Action and Adventure in my younger days, with a dash of Mystery.
Do you have a set writing schedule?
I start in the morning and finish around 5:00 pm. Like a typical workday.
Do you need silence to write or can you work in any environment?
I like silence, although my husband seems to think I go into a zone and have no clue what’s going on around me when I’m writing.
Were you an avid reader growing up?
Yes! Trixie Belden and Nancy Drew were my favorite books. I’d ride my bike to the library and barely be able to steer my bike home because my basket was overflowing with books.
If you could form the ultimate writers’ group, which authors past or present would you invite to join you?
Francine Rivers, Kristin Hannah, and Stephen King.
What is your go-to snack food and do you snack while writing?
I don’t snack too much when I’m writing, but I love anything salty—chips, peanuts, etc.
Who has influenced your writing the most?
My brother. When I wrote my debut novel, he would edit my pages and pepper me with questions so that I’d think and write more descriptive sentences.
Must you wear shoes to write?
Heaven’s no. Whatever feels comfortable.
Is there anything you would like my readers to know about you & your book?
When I first started writing my book, I didn’t think I’d have enough detail to fill a novel. It was an amazing experience to sit down each day and watch the words appear on each page. I became so emotionally involved with the characters that I’d dream about them at night.

“Life is full of secrets just like this book. Many are inconsequential; some are huge and life-altering.” I’m adding this to quotes taped to my computer.
This book sounds great with lots of key elements. I usually love anything with a bit of mystery and conflict x
