Excerpt from Son of Asmodeus

“Demon hunter.”

“Prick,” was all John had to say before the demon made the first strike.

As the demon punched John in the side of his face, he shook off the initial shock. Tasting a drop of blood from the corner of his mouth, John cocked his head to the left and then to the right while flexing his neck muscles. Before the demon could land a second blow, John pulled out his blade. The blade was black, cut uniquely, and the hilt bore symbols that were not known to many outside the inner circle of Hell. As he angled the blade to hit the light a bit more, the demon’s eyes grew narrow.

John realized the demon was more afraid of the blade than him. He used that fear against the demon. He waved the blade, taunting his enemy. Tossing the blade from hand-to-hand excited John before the kill while he watched the demon’s fear grow.

“You smell of Asteroth. What does he want with me? Do you like my toy? Want to play with it, prick?”

“Too many questions, hunter. Asteroth wants your head; then again, don’t we all?” The demon snickered while shifting in his stance. “This body, do you like it, hunter? I thought it would be capable of killing you. This body is strong, hunter. Strong enough to kill you.” The demon shifted in the body he possessed and then went to move closer to John.

My thoughts on Son of Asmodeus

Son of Asmodeus, Book 1 of the Heaven and Hell series by Barb Jones, sets the stage for an epic battle between angels and demons.

The beginning of the story involves world-building and character development. When I was about 30% in, the pieces started coming together, and I became much more engaged.

I was a little concerned about how religion would play into the plot. The author found a unique way to build an original story from a tale as old as time, Good vs. Evil.

Romance does not play a considerable role in Son of Asmodeus. The feelings developing between Sully and Mick show the potential for adding a more intense love interest in future books.

Overall, I found the plot engaging and the characters well-developed. I believe the story will resonate with many readers, regardless of their religious beliefs. This is a story about trust and survival.

Recommended for fans of Angel vs Demon, Good vs Evil, Fantasy, and Paranormal genres.

I received a copy of the book for the tour. This review is my honest, unbiased opinion.

Guest Post from Barb Jones

First things first. Thank you for having me as your guest on this tour stop for my latest novel, Son of Asmodeus – the first book in the Heaven and Hell series.

Have you ever wondered why you have a favorite character in the book or series you read? Most people will say, “ He/She is my favorite because….” and they will list the reasons. The character may be someone they were reminded of; they see themselves in that character or something completely different.

But did you ever wonder why that was? Authors tend to write what they know or feel comfortable about, but the development of the character will make a difference to you. Readers don’t tend to think about all the aspects that go into the character’s development, but the author certainly has!

The author has created a character that stands out to you more than the others, or you relate to them in some way. You, as the reader, just take it for what it is, but the author has created relatable characters. I use that term because you can relate to the character that happens to be your favorite. You believe in that character because the author created him/her to “not be perfect”. There are no perfect people in the world, so why should all the characters in a book be perfect? Would you relate to them if they were? Probably not.

I have over 9 books published, with more in the works and a book-to-movie work in progress. As an author, it is important to me to have characters that readers will relate to, that they will like, and more. Then the world I have created in my books is believable, and I can whisk readers away from the reality of their life into my book world as their escape. If you have seen me speak at a panel or on a podcast, you will have heard me talk about my characters.

Here’s a funny little story. I wrote Queen’s Destiny, the first in the Blood Prophecy series, and one of my friends from College bought my book. I didn’t know that until we were at a gathering with a bunch of other friends. She looked at me and said, “I love Chloe. She does the things I would do. We are like twins!” That’s when my friend told me how she could just relate her quirky behavior to some things that Chloe would do.

Since then, my friend has read each and every book and found herself emerging into that world. That is until she read Son of Asmodeus, the first in the Heaven and Hell series, and saw herself in one character from that book.

In the end, authors write so that we can engage with you, and relate with you on some level, and what better way to do it than to create a relatable character?
