My thoughts on The Adventures of Molly and Ollie-Moving Day by Sally Beale

The author did an exceptional job of capturing the fears and worries of a child who must move to a new home.

The concept of moving is made easier with the whimsical addition of a talking owl and stuffed animals that come to life.

A special gift from Grandma in one of the moving boxes is a very nice touch, making the distant family member seem close.

After all, the world is smaller than ever before in that we can reach out instantly to friends and family left behind. I believe this story will be valuable to any family contemplating a move with small children.

Now she is channeling her sense of fun and her youthful spirit into her children's stories.

Interview with Sally Beale

  • What is the most surprising thing you discovered while writing your book(s)?

When I was researching how to write a children’s book, I discovered that one rule was to not have your monster touch your characters. The monster could be as scary as you wanted, but not touch. I thought this was an interesting distinction. The most surprising thing I discovered in my own writing was how my characters really do start to take on their own personalities, and if I listen closely, they will usually tell me what they want to say.

  • Are you working on anything at the present you would like to share with your readers?

My next project is the second book in the Molly & Ollie series and is about playing in the backyard when all her friends are out of town. Ollie helps Molly and her toy friends find a game that they can all enjoy together.

  • What is your favorite quote?

Life begins at the edge of your comfort zone! It is my motto for life and helps make sure I’m always looking for my next adventure.

  • Who is your favorite author and why?

Stephen King. I know this might sound a little unconventional for a children’s book author, but I think he is a master of storytelling and his imagination is incredible. His way of creating new worlds and asking the reader to really examine their existing ideas is the definition of adventure. I may put my stories in a different frame, but I often read his work to remind myself of the possibilities of imagination and the power of writing. And I’ve read his book about writing—aptly titled On Writing—several times.

  • What do you like to do when you are not writing?

I actually like to cook in the evenings. I put on good music (my current favorite is Ed Sheeran!) and enjoy the process of creating something new and delicious. I like walking the greenway trail behind my house. Although, I  often end up writing in my head at the same time because it is so inspiring. I love watching movies; the Oscars have become an event for me each year as I try to watch all the nominated movies.

And I am a costume designer, and I love to work on theatre shows.
