My thoughts on The Christmas Blanket
Ed Damiano’s first children’s book is the lovely The Christmas Blanket. It tells the tale of young EJ who is searching for the true meaning of Christmas.
His mother takes him to see the lighting of the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree. She tells him if her belief that the tree is magical and can grant your Christmas wish.
While crossing the Hudson on the ferry to the city, another boy tells EJ Christmas is only about getting presents. He is quite distressed by this concept. He always believed there was something more to the holiday, but he’s not sure what.
As they sightsee in the city before the tree lighting, EJ & his mother see many delights, but also a few devastating sights.
When EJ finally see the magical Christmas tree light up and makes his heartfelt wish, we know he has discovered the true meaning of Christmas.
The book is written in language simple enough for young readers but captivating for all ages. The illustrations by Jeff Vernon add a nostalgic touch to the book and add a great deal to the flow of the story.
I believe this book will make a wonderful gift for families with young children that want to emphasize the importance of empathy and caring.
