My thoughts on The First of Shadows by Deck Matthews
The First of Shadows may be a novella meant to set up the remaining books in the series, but it is a gripping story all on its own. The story opens with a magnificent fight scene and the action will keep you turning page after page.
Deck Matthews builds a fantastic fantasy world for his Riven Realm series. The characters are well-developed, sometimes brutal, yet empathetic. There are several storylines that I thought would be confusing, but one by one they tie together to make a fantastic book.
The First of Shadows has every element for a wonderful fantasy story, totems, brands, talismans, airships, magi, demons, battles, and so much more. This epic sword and sorcery novella will leave you reaching for the next book in the series immediately!

Deck Matthews is a pseudonym for Matthew Ward. He is a life-long reader who fell in love with writing and fantasy in middle school.
