Series: Unwritten Runes #1
Published by Self-Published on 10/01/2021
Genres: Fiction, Dark Fantasy
Format: eBook, Hardcover, Paperback
Pages: 607

2nd place Finalist in BBNYA 2022, this queer dark fantasy Norse myth retelling is perfect for fans of Circe, The Witch's Heart, and The Silence of the Girls.
Perhaps you know the myths.
Furious, benevolent Gods.A tree that binds nine realms.A hammer stronger than any weapon. And someday, the end of everything.
But few have heard of me.

Looking back, it’s easy to know what choices I might have made differently. At least it feels that way. I might have given up on my title. Told my father he was useless, king of Gods or no, and left Asgard. Made a life somewhere else.
Maybe I would never have let Loki cross my path. Never have fallen in love.
But there’s no going back.
We were happy once.
And the price for that happiness was the end of everything.

My thoughts on The Goddess of Nothing at All

The Goddess of Nothing at All by Cat Rector, the second book in the Unwritten Runes Duology, is a remarkable queer dark fantasy Norse myth retelling that captivates readers from beginning to end. Garnering 2nd place in the BBNYA 2022, this novel is a must-read for fans of Circe, The Witch’s Heart, and The Silence of the Girls.

The story revolves around familiar elements of Norse mythology: the wrathful Gods, the binding tree that connects nine realms, and the legendary hammer. However, Rector takes these well-known myths and weaves them into a surprising narrative that explores themes of predestination, self-fulfilling prophecies, and the cycle of prejudice and hate.

Told from the perspective of Sigyn, The Goddess of Nothing at all offers a fresh retelling of the story of Loki and Sigyn, providing readers with a unique viewpoint and delving into the complexities of their relationship. Sigyn’s voice is authentic and compelling, making it easy to empathize with her struggles and choices throughout the book.

One of the novel’s strengths lies in its balanced approach to both plot development and character development. Rector skillfully crafts a narrative that keeps the reader engaged, constantly pushing the story forward while also delving into the depths of the character’s emotions and motivations. The pacing remains fast despite the book’s length, providing occasional moments of respite when needed.

LGBTQ+ representation is also a significant aspect of The Goddess of Nothing at All, as the book features queer characters and explores their experiences within the context of the story. This inclusion adds depth and richness to the narrative, further enhancing its appeal to a diverse readership.

The characters in the novel are portrayed with nuance and complexity. They are neither wholly good nor wholly bad but rather flawed and multifaceted, making them feel authentic and relatable. The emotional depth and growth of the characters throughout the book add another layer of richness to the overall reading experience.

In conclusion, The Goddess of Nothing at All is a captivating dark fantasy retelling that breathes new life into Norse mythology. With its surprising twists and turns, well-developed characters, LGBTQ+ representation, and skillful balance between plot and character development, this novel is a compelling read for fans of mythological retellings and anyone who enjoys a thought-provoking and immersive fantasy experience.

About Cat Rector

Cat Rector Author image

Cat Rector grew up in a small Nova Scotian town and could often be found simultaneously reading a book and fighting off muskrats while walking home from school. She devours stories in all their forms, loves messy, morally grey characters, and writes about the horrors that we inflict on each other. Currently, she lives in Belgium with her spouse. When she’s not writing, you can find her playing video games, spending time with loved ones, or staring at her To Be Read pile like it's going to read itself.

The Goddess of Nothing At All is her debut novel. You can read the first three chapters on her website.
