Author Interview
- Many diets prescribe low carbohydrates. Is there any merit in this strategy?
The typical American diet is full of too many overly processed carbs, not enough vegetables, fruits, and whole grains. Reducing not eliminating carbs is a good plan.
But carbs are not the enemy. Whole grains, starchy vegetables, and fruits are demonized by low carb diets but are full of nutrients keeping you healthy and contain fiber which keeps hunger in check between meals.
A moderate approach is best; reduce overly processed foods like white bread and chips, stay away from sugary drinks, limit desserts like cakes and cookies, and enjoy smaller portions of starches like potatoes and rice. The moderate approach allows you to keep the healthy carbs in your diet like apples, bananas, peas, quinoa, and oatmeal to name a few which are usually taboo on restricted carbohydrate diets,
You will feel better and find it easier to stick to a plan with a moderate carbohydrate approach and, because of that, probably be able to stick to the diet longer. Very low-carb diets cause mood changes, headaches, constipation, and cravings.
When eating a lower-carb diet, if you increase protein intake to make up for those calories, you will have the advantage of preserving muscle mass which anyone is at risk of losing while following a calorie-restricted diet.
Also, keep in mind, the initial weight loss is usually water, so if you are looking to fit into a dress for an upcoming wedding, using a low carb diet short-term may be harmless, but if you are looking for permanent results, the water returns as soon as the carbs are back on your plate.
- What are some strategies for eating fewer calories?
Eat until your hunger is gone not until you are feeling full. It takes your stomach twenty minutes to tell your brain you have had enough for now, so slow down when you eat and give those chemical and nerve signals a chance to naturally control your portions. Besides losing weight, you may find you have more energy and less indigestion.
Eat unprocessed or minimally processed foods to avoid hidden fat, sugar, and calories.
Choose foods with low-calorie density. Low-calorie dense foods are those that are full of water making them high in volume to satisfy hunger while being lower in calories. Try filling at least half the plate with vegetables and fruits.
- What advice would you give budding writers?
Write what you know. Research a subject until you feel you have uncovered all credible and questionable information you can find. Even with my utmost respect for science and proof, something can be learned from an anecdote or someone’s personal experience.
Create an outline first. Non-fiction and fiction writers alike use an outline to organize their thoughts and material.
Know your purpose. I had my first book outlined and bursting inside me but could not sit down and start typing for months. I felt it would be a waste of time, no one would read it. Then I attended a conference where the keynote speaker, a prominent physician, said there is nothing new to tell our patients, just find a way to tell them so they get it. And that I had. I had a way to help people understand what they needed to do to improve their health and the tools to get it done. And then, the writing just flowed.
- I have a job and family, how do I find time to write?
Whether it is time to write, exercise, or make phone calls, I always find it helpful to schedule it. I keep all of my appointments in a scheduler/planner and I make appointments with myself to write. By the beginning of each week, I have allocated several blocks of time to write. I find I do my best work in 60-90-minute sessions making it easier to schedule several dates a week with my laptop without being missed.
- What made you write a book about diets?
As a registered dietitian nutritionist providing nutrition counseling, I found it distressing to hear so many people put time and effort into a diet regimen and end up frustrated and disappointed with the results. Some were even putting their health at risk. I wanted to help people sift through the minefield of recommendations and misinformation about dieting and be able to choose the best method for weight loss success.
- There are many books out there about diets. What makes yours different?
No other book on the market summarizes diets, explains the principles and research behind them, and emphasizes the factors that may or make it a good choice for you, and is written by a nutrition expert.
