The Heaven Spot is a modern-day mystery set in Palm Beach, Florida, that depicts opioid addict Maggie Robert’s desperate attempt to come to terms with her estranged daughter, Lilly’s, murder.

Believing that she failed Lilly in life, Maggie vows to do right by Lilly in death by finding her killer and by learning about the woman Lilly became. But as Maggie immerses herself in Lilly’s glitzy tropical world, memories from a drug-hazy road trip surface and the truth unfolds in the form of an artsy treasure hunt game created by Lilly. Maggie fears she stabbed her own daughter.

The Heaven Spot is a story about guilt, self-doubt, and the strength and complexity of a mother-daughter relationship fractured by addiction. Part mystery, part thriller, part family drama, this novel gives readers a voyeuristic peek into the mind of a grieving mother who wishes she could hit the reset button and beg her living, breathing daughter for forgiveness.

Content Rating: PG-13 + M:
*There are curse words. The F-word is used once.
*There are no sex scenes, but the mom discovers that her daughter was sexually fluid and in relationships with a woman and an older man. (separately/not a throuple)
*There is no graphic violence.
*The novel does deal with mature themes like addiction, suicide, and adultery, as well as grief, guilt, the power of friendship, and forgiveness. However, given the protagonist’s addiction issues, it can be a bit raw at times.

My thoughts on The Heaven Spot

We begin The Heaven Spot in Virginia with Maggie’s bookstore closing due to her addiction, amongst other reasons. Her already churning world takes another monumental turn when the police inform her of the death of her estranged daughter, Lilly, in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Struggling with guilt and fighting her addictions, Maggie embarks on a mission to Florida to discover the truth behind Lilly’s death. But as she peels back the layers of Lilly’s world of glitz and glamour, she uncovers more than she bargained for. She finds memories of a drug-fueled past and a truth that threatens to shatter her fragile reality. While this is difficult in itself, the police have labeled Maggie a prime suspect.

But “The Heaven Spot” isn’t just about Maggie. Through flashbacks and memories, Lilly comes alive, her vibrant spirit leaping off the page despite her absence. Like a modern-day Alex from “The Big Chill,” Lilly’s commanding presence is a testament to Hill’s skill in creating multi-dimensional characters.

Mary Frances Hill sets up a web of mystery and emotion in “The Heaven Spot.” This isn’t your typical whodunit; it’s a heart-wrenching journey through the shattered pieces of a mother’s soul. Hill has created a tale of guilt, self-discovery, and the intricate dance between a mother and daughter torn apart by addiction. Maggie’s journey is raw and unfiltered, her emotions palpable with every turn of the page. You’ll find yourself drawn into her world, rooting for her redemption even as she struggles with her own demons.

Amidst the mystery, drama, and themes of love and acceptance, the author beautifully weaves authentic LGBTQ representation into the fabric of her story. It’s a refreshing addition that adds richness and depth to the tale.

The Heaven Spot” isn’t just a psychological thriller with suspenseful overtones. It’s a poignant exploration of the human experience and a testament to the resilience of the human spirit in the face of tragedy.

I received a copy of the book for the tour. This review is my honest, unbiased opinion.
