They kept to the shadows so no one would know they existed, and preyed on the nameless who no one would miss. Where did they come from, and who was protecting them?

In a city that had seen every kind of savagery, they were something new, something more than murderous.

And one woman who had thought she had lost everything there was to lose in life would soon find that nothing could possibly prepare her for what would come when she entered their world.

Excerpt from The Litter

The woman who’d initially screamed, seeing that other people had arrived, began hobbling away as fast as she could. Karen thought of grabbing her, but before she could one of the men, the tall, Indian-looking one, touched her arm.

“Let her go, miss. Lizzie don’t take too well to strangers, and if you approach her she may pull a knife on you. Let her go, and stay right here while Billy and I check it out.”

The man, along with his buddy, made their way into the alley, tattered jackets flapping around them.

A moment later, the one called Billy came back out and looked at Karen.

“You’d better steer clear, lady,” he said, his eyes a little foggy with whatever booze he’d recently drank. “It’s a pretty godawful sight in there.”

Karen pushed past the man and headed into the alley.

She saw the taller one about halfway down the alley, in front of a Dumpster overflowing with green garbage bags, crouching over a pile of – something.

As she got closer, the instinctive lurch of nausea in her stomach told her what the thing was.

The tall man waved her away, but Karen kept coming forward. She fixated first, through all the weltered and bloody flesh, on the thatch of reddish hair.

“Oh God,” she whispered, her stomach clenching at the possibility of Ricky splayed on the pavement. But as she came a few steps closer Karen realized that the body, or what was left of it, looked too large to be a young boy.

But not by much.

“Lady,” the tall guy said, at this point kneeling next to the corpse. “You really don’t want to be anywhere around this.”

Then the man stood and backed off, taking care to keep out of any patches or pools of blood, and as he moved away the body on the ground came into Karen’s view.

That clench in her stomach became more pronounced, and she suddenly had a hard time getting her breath.

“What the hell could have done that?” she asked, standing side by side with the stranger. Vaguely, she was aware of a crowd gathering behind them.

“Don’t know,” the man said, “but whatever it is, I’m glad it got hold of Annie instead of me.”

“Annie?”

“Sure.” He gestured. “That’s old Annie lying there. Don’t know her last name, even though I’ve known her for what must be years.”

“Would anyone around here know her full name?”

The tall man looked down at her and grinned.

“Hell, miss. As pickled as she usually was, I doubt most days even Annie knew her full name.”

Another one of them, Karen thought. Another of the so many nameless, faceless people who populated this part of town. It didn’t do Karen any good to remind herself that it wasn’t just this community, that any city of any size had a similar population. All that mattered to her were the ones right here and now.

    • Nancy,
Truthfully, when it first came out one reader told me that it caused issues with her fiance because for a while there she didn’t want to turn off the lights when they went to bed.
