The Overly Honest Teacher: Parenting Advice from the Classroom by Meredith EssalatPublished by The Collective Book Studio on October 13, 2020

Format: eBook, Paperback
Pages: 145
All parents want their children to be able to vocalize how they are feeling—to own their emotions, their opinions, their fears, and their views of the world. To achieve this, parents need to be models, showing their kids the importance of honest dialogue and effective listening. But parents don’t always feel prepared.
As both a teacher and school principal, Meredith Essalat has lived the daily challenges of helping children navigate through their young lives. She has seen the struggles that parents have as they balance longer working hours with the demands of home life. And how it’s the teachers who are often caught in the middle. In an effort to stop pointing out each other’s flaws—and instead letting kids know they are supported—Meredith offers hard-won pointers, enabling parents, teachers, and students alike to encourage one another while holding everyone accountable for their actions.
Combining humor with straightforward, practical advice, the Overly Honest Teacher shows parents how to welcome everyday parenting gracefully. The results will be well-adjusted, positive, enthusiastic young adults ready to work hard and take on the world. And isn't that what we all want for our children?

My thoughts on The Overly Honest Teacher by Meredith Essalat
The Overly Honest Teacher: Parenting Advice from the Classroom is a must-read for all school-age children’s parents. Take a look at the many issues facing your student and learn how to work with the teachers to strengthen, empower, and help your child find success.
Meredith Essalat has seen it all in her years of teaching and as a principal. Let her words guide you to becoming the type of parent your child needs to cope with the many aspects of life trying to hold them back.
The book is written in down-to-earth terms and offers sound advice without becoming too preachy. Even if there is advice you don’t necessarily agree with, that’s part of the plan. Learn to listen to each other and respect other opinions. How can our children become well-rounded, tolerant individuals if we don’t allow them the freedom to think for themselves? Don’t teach them bad habits such as offensive language, lying, gossiping through your own actions.
Mrs. Essalat leads you with examples of how to turn negatives into positives, improve your child’s self-esteem, and become the parent of a happy student.
This is a quick read at just 145 pages. Isn’t your child’s future worth the little time it will take you to read this guide? If you glean one nugget of help or inspiration from the book, It’s a victory.

Excerpts:
EXCERPT FROM PAGE 34
How are they forming their ideas and opinions on sex, love, and dating? How are they getting their information about world conflict, violence in the United States, and crime in elementary schools just like theirs? How are they deciphering what is acceptable language and what certain slang terms mean? Someone is going to teach your children about life. I implore you to be this person.
EXCERPT FROM PAGE 85
If we are celebrating when our kids succeed, why do we prevent ourselves from also acknowledging when the other team, the other student, the other you-fill-in-the-blank here, simply had a better day? Why are we so afraid of straight talk? Yes, Virginia, there are losers. Don’t underestimate a child’s resilience. Your child will get over their losses.

I’ve always said that education is a three-legged stool, and all three legs need to participate–the parent, the child, and the teacher. This sounds like a great book!
