My thoughts on The Red Fence
It’s never too early or late to teach the basics of tolerance and inclusivity. This tale does that in the simplest of terms, but the lessons are needed in today’s world.
The town of Vanderloo is faced with a new family that is slightly different from everyone else. They played music and games at odd hours, dressed differently, and most horrible of all, they painted their fence RED. Everyone in town knows that fences must be white.
The story teaches that tolerance of differences is okay, and uniqueness is nothing to hide or be ashamed of. It’s a beautifully told tale, and the colorful illustrations by Jenn Polk help bring the story to life.
I received a copy of the book for the tour. This review is my honest, unbiased opinion.

Interview with Ed Damiano
Which was the hardest character to write? The easiest?
The hardest characters to write were both the Vanderloos and the Beans combined. I wanted to tell the story in a humorous but serious way, so interaction between the characters took time. The easiest character was in my first book as it was based on my son, and it was easier to bring his personality into the story.
In your book, you talk about the red fence; how did you come up with this idea?
The Red Fence came about because of an experience I had helping my daughter with the renovation of her home. We decided to put up a fence, and it created a firestorm in the community. The neighbors all came to a meeting with the town to express their opinion that their town was not a town of fences. I took that experience and imagined a town that disliked a fence that wasn’t the same as theirs. Hence the Red Fence.
Where do you get inspiration for your stories?
My inspirations for my stories come from my personal experiences, family, friends, and just my imagination.
What is your next project?
My next story, currently in production, is about Ellie the elephant and her love of ballet. The story is about how you can be whatever you want to be if you believe in yourself and not let society or others tell you otherwise.
How long have you been writing?
I wrote my first book 7 years ago, but I didn’t pursue publication till 2019.
