My thoughts on Toby and the Silver Blood Witches
Toby and the Silver Blood Witches, the first book in the Toby Bean trilogy, is a magical page-turner that will captivate readers aged 9 and above. This book has received numerous accolades, including the prestigious Book Bloggers’ Novel of the Year Award 2022 and WriteBlend Award 2022, and was a finalist in the Wishing Shelf Awards 2021. It was also shortlisted for the Selfies Book Awards 2022 and Rubery Book Awards 2022.
The story follows twelve-year-old Toby, who finds himself drawn into a sinister plot that unfolds beyond his garden hedge. With his mother falling ill, Toby’s main concern is taking care of her. However, he soon discovers mysterious happenings, such as a figure lurking behind a barbed wire fence and a strange woman in his attic accompanied by a bothersome pet bat and a broken broom.
Toby becomes entangled in a thrilling adventure involving flying dogs, sparking hiccups, and perilous escapes. A young witch has been captured by a secretive organization that is determined to uncover the secrets of magic. Time is running out, and Toby must rescue her before it’s too late.
One of the standout aspects of this book is the way it addresses important real-life issues. Toby is a likable character who is dealing with the challenges of having a mother diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS). The book handles the impact of CFS on the family dynamics with sensitivity and insight.
The author skillfully weaves together magic, adventure, and danger to create a story that is both captivating and accessible for middle-grade readers. The mix of magic and adventure adds an element of escapism, providing a delightful reading experience.
Toby and the Silver Blood Witches is a page-turner that will engage not only its target audience but also adults who appreciate a well-crafted and imaginative story. Sally Doherty’s writing effortlessly transports readers into a world filled with wonder and excitement.
Furthermore, it is worth mentioning that ten percent of the author’s profits from this book are donated to the ME Association, adding a commendable philanthropic aspect to the reading experience.
Overall, Toby and the Silver Blood Witches is a magical and heartfelt tale that combines relatable themes, thrilling action, and well-written fantasy. Sally Doherty has created a compelling story that will leave readers eagerly anticipating the next installment in the Toby Bean trilogy.
