🚨 Transmission Intercepted: An Excerpt from In Irina's Cards

The Variant Conspiracy doesn't begin with a bang-it begins with a whisper in the dark and a hand dragging you into the unknown. Step into Irina's world, where psychic readings barely scratch the surface of what's to come, and danger is already closing in. If you thought your secrets were safe, think again…

We walked a bit farther in silence. I had assumed Jonah would find something, at least a mention of the drug, within the files at Innoviro. How could something either guarded or fresh out of the lab, be a trustworthy substance I should let them inject into my veins? Even if Ivan showed me charts and research findings, what insight could I gain from them?

Jonah and I rounded a corner. The path diverged around a ring of shrubs and a large arbutus tree. On the one side, the path jutted out to a viewpoint looking over to the Inner Harbour. On the other, a bench sat tucked into a semicircle of overgrown juniper bushes. The sun had nearly dropped behind the hills in Esquimalt, casting vivid yellow-orange light onto downtown. Bright pink clouds floated like cotton candy in the sky. If we kept going the Harbour would greet us in its gown of twinkling lights. My sunroom balcony had that view at every sunset. I turned towards the bench. I suddenly felt like I needed a break.

Jonah sat down next to me. He touched the side of my mouth and I jumped.

"Sorry; you had some ice cream …" he said sheepishly.

I wished I was the kind of girl who carried a mirror in my purse, but I knew better than to bother searching. I looked out at the ocean and the pink pieces of light floating on the water.

"You look tense."

His arm slipped behind my back as I kept staring ahead. I turned to answer and found myself nose-to-nose with him.

"I didn't see a second man behind me until it was too late. He covered my mouth with his hand and pulled me backward into the trees."

🖋️ Guest Post by Christine Hart, The Variant Conspiracy Author

Convince us why you feel your book is a must-read.

The Variant Conspiracy trilogy is in its second edition now, almost ten years after it was first published. So, what makes it a must-read in 2025?

I think the question that inspired the books is more relevant today than it was then. What if the men destroying our world were doing it on purpose?

The idea seemed simple at first. Corporations that pollute must understand the harm they're doing. They just care more about money than they do about humanity. Whether they plan to live on the last comfortable island or a space station in orbit, they must also believe that the fallout won't apply to them. The dynamic made me angry, and I was disgusted by it.

But my writer mind kept creating alternate explanations. What if pollution was a means to an end? What if destructive fracking and virus-breeding were tools of their trade? And what if the fallout won't apply to them, because a ravaged environment will suit them perfectly.

When I originally wrote the books (between 2012 and 2016), dystopian fiction was popular. And I wanted to create something for a market I consumed as a reader and viewer. The story that evolved as I worked on the first book drew from those personal tastes as well as my experiences in the corporate world. I was genuinely optimistic about the geopolitical landscape, so the story was just for fun.

I love playing around with science fiction and fantasy fusion. So, the books have mutants and a little magic. Deep time and mysticism. All with a romance element that keeps the story light and fun.

Today, just about everything seems heavy and scary at every turn. These books tell a story that plunges characters into darkness, but comes out into a positive, bright light. I think that's something many readers need more than ever.

Question for author-What's the strangest or most interesting thing you had to research for this book?

    • Although I'd describe this series as 'soft' science fiction, I did do a bit of research before crafting the backstory of Jonah's variation. (His was unstable because he experimented on himself, rather than being born with an ability.)

    • You are most welcome. I had the best time designing the post! I wanted to make it unique from other tour stops. 😊

What is a specific scene or aspect of your book that you're particularly proud of, and what made it so challenging or rewarding to write?
