Guest Post from the Author of What Bear Said about Life, Love, and Other Stuff
“On this day I was thinking of how much I loved these woods and Bear and all the critters…
Bear what is love? I heard a song that said,
“Love is the Answer.”
I don’t even know the question.
What Bear Said
Oh good! Love is my favorite subject!
We all need love. If you love someone you’re kind to them, patient, understanding, forgiving. You want what’s best for them.
Love is what you feel for your family and friends. Love holds us together, brings us
joy and gratitude. It makes us want to do
and be our best. We can’t live without love.”
Call me corny, but I really do believe love is the answer to most problems we face as human beings. So, of course, I would make this a favorite subject of Bear. The boy is trying to figure out exactly what love is and this comes from my own experiences of love in various forms within my family and in my ever-changing surroundings as I grew up.
Not everyone who was supposed to love me made me feel loved. They didn’t know how to express it clearly. Some expressed it a lot, almost to the point of overwhelming me with it. Love can be confusing. Sometimes it is more about the other’s need than about actually loving us. A young child cannot discern the difference.
To me, there is nothing more important than for a child to feel loved and to know they are loveable. Without this a child is lost in a scary world and will develop unhealthy ways to compensate. At any age, when the core of our being is filled with a solid knowing that we are loved, we are more likely to be happy, peaceful, healthy and able to deal with life. We are also going to be able to give love.
Bear gives the boy an important message about loving himself, which the boy can’t entirely grasp at first. This is a major life lesson for all of us, I think, to actually learn to love and accept ourselves. It is crucial because without self-love it is very difficult to love anyone else.
Bear talks about love of friends, family, parental love, love of self and being “in love.” The chapter following deals with forgiveness which is almost always a part of loving someone or ourselves. Bear also teaches boy it is important to tell someone why you love them and to be honest and kind in our communication with everyone. Bear models acts of kindness and compassion, all a part of being a loving person.
There is a passage in the book where the boy tells Bear his feelings are hurt by something Bear did. There is an honest conversation, an apology, and forgiveness. I included this in the book because I want the young reader to understand that even in very loving relationships there can be hurt feelings, misunderstanding and things can be repaired when communication is honest and the intention is loving and goes both ways. Hopefully, these scenes will inspire deeper conversation within a family who reads What Bear Said together.
