Going home for Hanukkah is normally the least of Leah’s worries until her mom lets it slip that her dad invited her ex-boyfriend. Desperate to keep him at arm’s length, Leah invites her handsome coworker Kenneth Knar to be a buffer against her family.

Having to pretend he’s her new boyfriend doesn’t hurt, and if it annoys her parents, all the better.

He just has to find some way to tell her that he’s more than just a gentile. He’s not even from this planet. And Leah hates liars.

Excerpt from Meteors and Menorahs

A man in a freshly pressed shirt and tie bustled into the kitchen, arms out. Before I could say a single word, he pulled Leah out of my arms and into a long hug. “There’s my girl!”

To her credit, Leah was out of the embrace as quickly as she was able to shove her hands up between them. “David! I wasn’t expecting you this early!”

Was that a grimace on her face?

“Well, your dad said you were here, and my last cardiology patient canceled so I figured I’d get over here.”

“Weird flex,” Leah said. “We all know what you do.”

“And who is this?” he said, ignoring the dig.

“This is Kenneth,” Leah said, grabbing my arm. “My boyfriend.”

David looked thunderstruck. “Boyfriend? Why haven’t I heard of this boyfriend?”

“We aren’t friends,” Leah said. “I have no reason to talk to you.”

“Leah, be nice,” her mother chided. The woman was short, but she still managed to move everyone with sheer presence out of the kitchen and into the living room without anyone complaining.

“I’m sorry, I haven’t had the opportunity to tell you all about my nice new very handsome boyfriend,” Leah said, running one palm up over the swell of my arm. I’d been feeling a little underdressed since the ex-boyfriend was in a nice shirt, but if I’d known it meant she’d be touching me skin to skin like this, I would have worn a tank top.

How does reading science fiction compare to watching science fiction? Is there a benefit to reading science fiction?

 

This is tricky. With recent advances in CGI and film technology, we are finally getting films with really awesome special effects, and it lets us just sink into a story without doing a lot of mental work to picture it. This can be tricky for a lot of people.

When you’re reading sci fi, you’re getting a lot more exposure to terms and the immediacy of the work. Watching sci fi comes with background music and audio cues which can give a hint to what’s coming next. Books also give us more access to the internal dialogue of a character and how they’re experiencing life.

At the end of Revenge of the Sith, the movie version just shows us Vader’s medical treatment and how he’s enclosed into the iconic suit and his harsh, slow breathing thereafter. Matthew Stover’s novel version offers us “The light burns you. It will always burn you. Part of you will always lie upon the black glass sand beside a lake of fire while flames chew your flesh.” It reminds us that even though Darth Vader has been healed, physically he’s suffering terribly.

There’s also a lot more mental work that goes into reading. You’re having to imagine scenes or bring the characters to life when a movie does that for you, and if you were a fan of something that the movie was based on, you might not like what the casting director and costume designers came up with.

You do get a lot more rich visuals that come with sci fi. The author might not go into a lot of detail on describing the corridors of a spaceship for example, but in the movie you might see subtle design changes to differentiate one ship’s setting from another. Window shapes, bunk designs, even subtle details in uniforms that a narrator of a book might not pick up on.

There’s a reason that when we rewatch movies, we catch more on that second or third or fifth watch. There are points where you can be so dazzled by the cinematic skill of the production crew and acting in a movie that you missed some vital moment of character development.
