Mortal Weather by KP McCarthy | Book Review ~ 1 Hardback Copy Available ~ Guest Post from Author | #LiteraryFiction @iReadBookTours @TopReadsPublishingMortal Weather: A Novel by KP McCarthy
Published by Top Reads Publishing on September 26, 2023
Genres: Adult Fiction 18+, Literary Fiction
Format: eBook, Hardcover, Paperback
Pages: 310

After enduring the loss of his wife and surviving a near fatal accident at work, Stanhope Ellis decides he’s ready for a change of scenery.

Unfortunately, the people he meets in his new locale are dropping like flies, and he might be the reason. As he struggles with whether he’s Death Man or a cosmic witness, he meets a wise nurse, Gayathri Das, who helps him navigate the emotional minefield. But will she die, like the others?

Fondness for each of the characters is easy to come by, which is a hazard in a story where death comes calling so often. Each character’s tale is filled with glimpses of ourselves and everyone we’ve ever loved, compelling the reader to hear them out, maybe for the last time. It’s a dizzying entanglement of friendship, grief, and perseverance from which there is no rush to be free. At once comforting and urgent, this book will fill your cup, break your heart, and put it back together, winking all the way.

A brilliant and memorable debut novel, Mortal Weather is an existential adventure — a timely, joyous examination of life and death with an against-all-odds love story at its core.

Content Rating: PG-13 + M rating. There is bad language, no explicit sex scenes, but there is a lot of death and some references to suicide.

My Thoughts on Mortal Weather

Mortal Weather

Mortal Weather by KP McCarthy is a remarkable literary fiction debut that delves deep into the human experience, offering readers a poignant exploration of life, death, and the fragile threads that bind them. McCarthy masterfully weaves a narrative that revolves around Stanhope Ellis, a man whose life takes a dramatic turn after enduring the loss of his wife and a near-fatal accident at work. Seeking solace in a new place, Stanhope finds himself surrounded by a community in the throes of an inexplicable wave of deaths and the unsettling possibility that he might be the harbinger of their demise.

The central character, Stanhope Ellis, grapples with a profound existential crisis, oscillating between the unsettling moniker of “Death Man” and the role of a cosmic observer. McCarthy introduces us to the enigmatic nurse Gayathri Das, a character who adds depth and wisdom to Stanhope’s tumultuous journey. Their relationship forms the heart of the novel, and the question of whether she will meet the same fate as others keeps the readers engaged.

What sets Mortal Weather apart is its exceptional character development. McCarthy skillfully crafts a diverse cast, including dogs, each with unique quirks and stories that make it easy for readers to connect emotionally. Despite the omnipresent specter of death, the author succeeds in endearing us to these characters, drawing us into their lives with a magnetic force.

Mortal Weather is a story of friendship, grief, and the unwavering human spirit. McCarthy’s prose is both comforting and urgent, inviting readers to traverse the complex terrain of the human condition. As you immerse yourself in the pages, be prepared for a rollercoaster of emotions. The author navigates themes of perseverance with finesse, offering a timely exploration of what it means to live and love in challenging times.

While Mortal Weather is rich in its exploration of life and death, it does come with a content warning. The novel contains adult language and touches on sensitive topics like death and suicide. However, these elements are woven into the narrative with care and sensitivity, serving the story’s overarching themes.

In Conclusion

Mortal Weather is an unforgettable debut that invites readers on an existential adventure. KP McCarthy’s writing is fluid, engaging, and infused with a sense of urgency that resonates with the times we live in. The recurring themes of mortality, perseverance, and the essence of life itself create a compelling mystery that keeps you hooked until the very last page. This book will fill your cup, break your heart, and put it back together, all while winking knowingly. It is a testament to the power of storytelling and a must-read for those who seek profound literary experiences.

I received a copy of the book for the tour. This review is my honest, unbiased opinion.

Guest Post from the Author of Mortal Weather

Vesuvius for an Inkstand

KP McCarthy
September 2023

When I began MORTAL WEATHER, I posted a quotation on the wall of my study:

Give me a condor’s quill! Give me Vesuvius’ crater for an inkstand! … To produce a mighty book, you must choose a mighty theme. — Herman Melville

With this inspiration I tried to think broadly, continually, and to pursue the largest ideas. Others will say to what degree I was successful in the end. In any case, the exercise, the “expanding to [the theme’s] bulk,” was good for me.

I’d say living large facilitates writing large. Beryl Markham’s West with the Night is one of the best books of any sort ever written (read it now), largely because she attacked her opportunities with great courage. She was mauled by a lion at a young age, forgodsake, and went on to achieve great feats of aviation. It was all good training for literary success. Her memoir is written without a trace of regret or apology. Yet it’s full of heart. She felt great affection for Africa, for adventure for it’s own sake, for many animals, and for many outrageous personalities. It’s romantic without a shred of kiss-and-tell — amazing, considering her famous bedfellows.

Sure, big and high and wide is scary. Stephen King said fear is the biggest problem a writer has. But, like Beryl Markham, you can act preemptively. You can get out there and defeat what haunts you before it creeps into your keyboard. You can climb out of the weeds and into the sky, singing to the world the exhilaration of it all.
