Series: Islands in the Mist #1

J.M. Hofer delivers page-turning tales of adventure and sorcery in her award-winning novel, Islands in the Mist, and its sequels. Set in Iron Age Britain and steeped in Welsh legend, her series brings to life the mythic world before the arrival of King Arthur.
In Book I, the great warrior Bran is called home from the battlefield to his mother's deathbed. He vows to solve the mystery of what fatally attacked her in the night, for though many have dismissed it as a wolf attack, she insisted with her dying breath it was not.
On his journey for answers, Bran encounters the fiery prophetess Lucia and her strangely-gifted stable boy, Gwion, both of whom will loom large in his future.
Upon returning home with the terrifying truth about the threat they are facing, Bran finds himself at odds with the hot-tempered Aelhaearn, determined to become their clan's next chieftain.
Fate will wind tightly together as they attempt to defeat the creator of their nocturnal enemies—a creator who is patiently pulling all who oppose her deep into the seductive maelstrom of her power.

Quick Take A richly researched, character-driven fantasy that blends myth, adventure, and subtle magic into a deeply immersive story.

My Thoughts

Islands in the Mist immediately impressed me with how grounded and well-researched it feels. The historical detail never overwhelms the story, but instead quietly strengthens it, giving the world a lived-in authenticity that makes the adventure feel real rather than purely fantastical.

The plot moves with confidence, offering plenty of action, unexpected turns, and moments of tension that kept me engaged throughout. I especially enjoyed how mythology is woven into the narrative-not as spectacle, but as something natural and integral to the characters' lives and beliefs. The hints of magical realism are light and carefully placed, which made them feel more powerful when they appeared.

One of the book's greatest strengths is its cast of characters. Lucia and Bran are compelling leads, but even the supporting characters stand out with many quickly becoming a favorite. Each character feels purposeful, with relationships and motivations that add emotional weight to the story.

I also appreciated how much of the medieval lifestyle is conveyed through the settings themselves. From daily routines to the broader structure of clan life, the details helped me feel immersed in the time and place without slowing the pace of the narrative.

Overall, Islands in the Mist is a rewarding read for fans of myth-infused fantasy who enjoy strong characters, thoughtful worldbuilding, and an adventurous plot. It's an excellent opening to the series and left me eager to continue.

Closing Notes

Islands in the Mist is a thoughtfully crafted blend of history, mythology, and adventure that feels both immersive and grounded. With its strong characters, carefully woven legend, and sense of place, it sets a solid foundation for the series and makes a compelling case for continuing the journey. Readers who enjoy myth-infused fantasy with emotional depth and subtle magic will find a great deal to appreciate here.

About J.M. Hofer

Author J.M. Hofer standing outdoors, smiling with arms crossed, wearing a navy blazer over a light top, with greenery softly blurred in the background.

From J.M. Hofer:

As a child, whenever anyone would ask me, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” I would answer, “I want to write books!” That enthusiasm has never wavered. Fifty years later, I still feel most fulfilled when I'm writing.

As a reader, I regularly devour books on mythology, folklore and fairy tales. I believe the stories we choose to tell generation after generation are doorways into the heart of humanity. These are the stories that assure us we're not the first to doubt ourselves or face what seems an impossible challenge; the stories that help us realize we're not alone in our struggles. Most importantly, they inspire us to summon the courage to leave behind the familiar and find out what we're made of--to face the dragon, resist the trickster, and heed the advice the village elder gives us.

My aim as a storyteller is to transport you to a world that feels ancient yet somehow familiar, where the veil between realms is thin and magic is very, very much alive.
