Review: There's a Young Man Dressed in Blue by Fabio Amabili | A Thought-Provoking Psychological Thriller
This is a story that resists easy answers. It unfolds in layers, inviting the reader to sit with uncertainty, to question what is real, and to decide for themselves what it all means. For some, that will be the magic. For others, it may feel just out of reach.
In this review of There's a Young Man Dressed in Blue by Fabio Amabili, I share my thoughts on what readers can expect from this psychological thriller.

My Thoughts
With that in mind, this is one of those books where the experience will likely vary widely from reader to reader-and that feels very much by design.
There's a Young Man Dressed in Blue is not a conventional psychological thriller, and going in with that expectation makes a difference. This is a story that leans heavily into ambiguity, layered perspectives, and a structure that asks the reader to actively engage rather than passively follow along.
One of the most interesting elements for me was the use of dual timelines presented in distinct fonts. It's a small stylistic choice, but an effective one-it helped ground the shifting perspectives and made it easier to track where I was in the narrative, even as the story itself became more complex.
This is also a book that doesn't guide the reader toward a single interpretation. Instead, it presents events with a certain level of distance and lets you decide what is real, what is imagined, and how everything connects. That approach will absolutely work for some readers, especially those who enjoy unpacking a story long after they've finished it.
For me, this wasn't an effortless read. I found myself slowing down, sometimes re-reading sections to stay oriented as the narrative shifted. That isn't necessarily a drawback-it's simply the kind of reading experience this book offers. It's more reflective than entertaining, more about interpretation than momentum.
If you enjoy stories that ask a bit more of the reader, you might also like my review of The Web of Time by Flavia Brunetti, which offers a similarly layered and thought-provoking reading experience.
The translation from French to English occasionally felt a bit uneven, with a few phrases that pulled me out of the flow, but not enough to obscure the overall intent of the story.
At its core, this is a novel built around ambiguity and a transformative twist-one that invites you to reconsider everything that came before. If you're a reader who enjoys that kind of open-ended, thought-provoking storytelling, there is a lot here to appreciate. If you prefer a more clearly defined narrative with firm answers, this may feel just out of reach.
In Conclusion
There's a Young Man Dressed in Blue is a thoughtfully constructed novel that leans into complexity, ambiguity, and interpretation. While it wasn't an effortless reading experience for me, I can appreciate the intention behind its structure and the way it challenges the reader to engage more deeply with the story.
This is a book that will resonate most with readers who enjoy literary thrillers that blur the line between reality and perception, and who don't mind sitting with unanswered questions. For the right reader, it offers a unique and lingering experience.
If you're in the mood for something reflective, unconventional, and open to interpretation, this may be a story worth exploring.
Guest Post by Fabio Amabili
To offer a deeper look into the inspiration behind There's a Young Man Dressed in Blue, Fabio Amabili shares how a single moment-and a fleeting image-sparked the layered, thought-provoking story readers encounter on the page.
From Villa Borghese to a Blurred Reality: How the Story Started Running
It was a late October afternoon-one of those days when Rome shows its best side.
I was jogging in the Parco dei Daini of Villa Borghese, and the orange rays of the setting sun chased me between the trunks of the holm oaks. My steps on the gravel beat a regular, hypnotic rhythm, in tune with my breathing.
That was when my thoughts began to race on their own.
The first image that flashed through my mind was a black-and-white photograph: a man in a dark jacket, bow tie, cigarette in his mouth, icy eyes staring into the distance. It was the portrait of Bulgakov I had seen a few weeks earlier in Moscow, at the house-museum on 10 Bolshaya Sadovaya.
From there, I found myself thinking about The Master and Margarita, with its intertwining and overlapping perspectives.
The idea for a novel began to take shape-one that would explore multiple narrative voices running in parallel, seemingly independent, yet ultimately belonging to the same fragmented "I." Not a mechanical alternation, but something more unsettling: two perspectives that appear to belong to different people, yet share the same body, the same mind, the same destiny.
At that moment, two distinct images formed: darkness enveloping a city and mist rising from the sea-Milan and the Adriatic coast, two states of mind. One rational and controlled. The other instinctive, irrational, and open to the unknown.
I kept running, and other ideas crowded in quickly: mysteries rooted in documented events that remain unexplained, secrets that defy certainty, and a revelation involving the protagonists that would culminate in a final twist-one that redefines the entire story.
Over the following days, I chased these insights. The result was a book designed to be reread. When chapter 33 arrives, the narrative transforms. It is not a conventional twist-it is an event that changes the meaning of everything that came before, while leaving the words themselves unchanged.
The last rays of sunlight disappeared between the trees. I stopped, my heart pounding, and looked up.
The bearded marble mask atop the column was looking at me.
It seemed to be smiling.
Perhaps because, like the book that was being born, it hid a secret-one that only reveals itself to those who follow it to the very end.
