BBNYA 2025 Finalist Review: Soul Fraud by Andrew Givler | A Darkly Funny Supernatural Review
A clever blend of dark humor and supernatural intrigue, where soul collection feels less like damnation-and more like a very strange day at the office.
Some stories take familiar systems and turn them just enough to make you see them differently-and Soul Fraud by Andrew Givler does exactly that. What starts as a structured, almost corporate-feeling world quickly reveals something far more imaginative, where debts aren't just financial and the stakes reach well beyond the living.
Set within the strangely bureaucratic world of Hell Corporate, this story blends supernatural elements with a surprisingly light touch. Demons, deals, and even the devil's inner circle are presented through a lens that balances tension with humor, creating a tone that feels more clever than heavy. With that in mind, here are my thoughts on Soul Fraud.

| My Rating: | ★★★★☆ |
| Quick Take: | A smart, darkly funny take on soul collection wrapped in a supernatural corporate world. |
Before we get into my full thoughts, here's a quick note for readers:
Content Considerations
- Supernatural themes involving demons, Hell, and soul collection
- Dark humor throughout (balances heavier concepts)
- Moral ambiguity and deal-making
- Some language consistent with adult fiction
Beneath the humor and unusual setting, the story still finds room to explore the choices that define us.
My Thoughts
This is one of those stories that leans into its premise and makes the most of it. The idea of soul collection framed through a corporate structure is both creative and surprisingly effective, giving the story a unique rhythm that feels familiar and completely original at the same time.
The tone is where this book really shines. While the subject matter could easily become heavy, there's a consistent thread of humor running underneath it all. It softens the darker edges without removing them entirely, creating a balance that keeps the story engaging rather than overwhelming.
Characters add to that balance in meaningful ways. Figures like Lilith bring a sense of real presence and danger, but even those moments are offset by the story's slightly offbeat perspective. It creates a world that feels layered-part intimidating, part oddly relatable.
The setting of Hell Corporate is particularly well done. Treating something traditionally portrayed as chaotic or terrifying as structured and procedural adds a fresh twist, and it allows the story to explore its themes from a different angle. It's less about fear and more about how systems-no matter where they exist-shape behavior and choices.
What stood out most is how naturally the humor and darker elements coexist. Neither one overwhelms the other, and that balance gives the story its distinct voice.
In the end, Soul Fraud offers a creative and unexpectedly entertaining take on the idea of soul collection, blending humor, supernatural elements, and thoughtful character work into a story that feels both unique and accessible.
