The case gets dropped on Curtis Westcott’s desk, but Boston’s Chief of Homicide has little to work with. No clues, no body, no motive. Renee had no enemies, no financial skeletons in the closet, and no bitter ex- boyfriends. Curtis and Aislinn Byrne, his go-to detective on tough cases, work the file hard but come up empty. Then Westcott attends a party and overhears a story that catches his attention – he and Aislinn have their first break.
They dig in and unravel a complex series of crimes tied to Renee’s disappearance. As they peel back the layers they are convinced Renee is still alive, but that her abductor is on a precise schedule and has every intention of killing her. My thoughts on A Killing Game by Jeff Buick
There is always that bit of unknown when starting a new series. Will I like it, is it the same old, same old? From page one, I knew this book was different. It hooked me from the opening paragraphs and did not let go until the last page was turned.
The race against time to solve the mysterious clues before it’s too late is captivating. Buick created the story in a style that you have no clues before the detectives do. I usually pride myself on figuring out the clues before anyone else. It was a unique but enjoyable process to decipher the mystery along with the characters.
The fast pace of the book made finishing it easy. I read it in one sitting, albeit I read way into the night. It is definitely a just one more chapter kind of book until you no longer even think about it. You know you are reading until the mystery is solved.
I also want to mention the settings. Each city is so well-described you are drawn into the scenes. I felt like I traveled to Lake Forest, Napa Valley, Chicago, and Boston during my time reading the book.
Mr. Buick brought Curtis and his team of detectives, as well as the other major players, to life in a way that made the story play like a movie in my head. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series.
Lovers of mystery, suspense, and thrillers need to grab a copy of A Killing Game today!
