My thoughts on Bob the Banana Goes Bad

Bob the Banana Goes Bad by Steve Petzinger image

Bob the Banana was originally written by author Steve Petzinger when he was twelve years old. His mother saved the story, and his family frequently urged him to publish it.

In 2020 he invited his friend Selai Akbar-Hussain, a preschool teacher, to work with him to finally publish the tale.

They have written a fun story for children about never giving up hope. A pastor once told me, “There may not be much of a chance, but there is always hope.” This lesson stuck with me for many years. I think this book might have the same effect on children and the adults who read to them.

Juan Diaz wonderfully illustrates this book. The pictures will entertain young readers. The puns will please children who are a bit older.

I recommend this story to libraries, daycares, schools, and families with little ones. It is sure to please all readers.

I received a copy of the book for the tour. This review is my honest, unbiased opinion.

Interview with author Steve Petzinger

  • Where does the story take place?
    • In a refrigerator in no distinct town or country.
  • How did you come up with the character names?
    • I tried to think of common foods that everyone could appreciate or identify with and then experimented with names using humor and alliteration
  • Do you have to deal with any distractions while writing?
    • The biggest distraction I have to deal with when writing is my cat. Though I love her dearly, sometimes she gets upset and disturbs me when my laptop or phone seems to be getting more attention than her.
  • What’s your favorite snack or drink while writing?
    • I enjoy flavored seltzer water to stay hydrated and focused.
  • If you could be any one of the characters in the book, who would you want to be?
    • Bernie the bagel, because he was wise, reasonable, and respected.
  • What did you learn during the publishing process that you would like to share with other aspiring authors?
    • The most important thing for me as a new author was to be open to constructive feedback from friends and editors. Two pairs of eyes are better than one.
