My Thoughts on Children Who Dance in the Rain

At its heart, Children Who Dance in the Rain is a tale that encourages empathy, nurtures self-confidence, and inspires an attitude of appreciation in young minds. It skillfully introduces children to diverse perspectives and experiences while teaching them the value of gratitude for the blessings in their own lives.

The story follows the journey of Sophie, a young girl who finds it difficult to appreciate the world around her. Always immersed in her tablet, Sophie’s boredom is quickly replaced with excitement when her family plans a trip to India. Arriving in a place she had only heard of in stories, Sophie discovers the joy and contentment possessed by the underprivileged children living in a mud colony.

This encounter sets her on a path of self-discovery, ultimately leading her to a profound understanding of true happiness and the power of gratitude. The fact that the story is based on true events adds an extra layer of authenticity and significance.

One of the standout aspects of Children Who Dance in the Rain is its commitment to giving back. The book’s initiative to donate 100% of net proceeds from every fourth copy sold to charities such as Save The Children, GiveWell, and Bright Sparks School in Mohali, India, is commendable. By incorporating this core theme of philanthropy, the book teaches children and adults alike about the importance of charity and its impact on the lives of underprivileged children.

The illustrations in the book are simply enchanting, capturing the emotions and essence of the story beautifully. The vibrant colors and attention to detail make it a visual delight for children, enhancing their engagement with the narrative.

Furthermore, Children Who Dance in the Rain succeeds in delivering its valuable messages without feeling didactic or preachy. It seamlessly weaves the themes of gratitude, empathy, privilege, and charity into the fabric of the story, allowing young readers to absorb these life lessons naturally.

In addition to teaching empathy and gratitude, the book provides a valuable opportunity for children to explore life in a different part of the world. It opens their eyes to diverse cultures, fostering a sense of curiosity and understanding at an early age.

In conclusion, Susan Justice’s Children Who Dance in the Rain is a truly exceptional children’s book. Its ability to captivate young readers while instilling important values of empathy, gratitude, and giving back is truly commendable. With its beautiful illustrations, accessible language, and heartfelt narrative, this book is highly recommended for parents, educators, and anyone seeking to inspire and educate young minds.

I received a copy of the book for the tour. This review is my honest, unbiased opinion.

About Susan Justice

Susan Justice author image

Susan Justice, a dedicated children's legal advocate and co-founder of a groundbreaking organization fighting child abuse, felt the urge to do something more.

Diving into the world of books, she discovered a real lack of resources that gently tackled the world's inequalities and encouraged kids to step up and help others.

The harsh truth about widespread hunger and the limited access to basic needs like food, clean water, and education often stay hidden from children's innocent eyes. Susan's passion ignited, pushing her to shine a light on these pressing issues and inspire kids to get involved and make a difference.

As a loving mom of three babies, she constantly searched for ways to teach them important values and help them appreciate the resources they had, which many kids around the world could only dream of.

With a determined heart, Susan embarked on a journey to create a book that would teach young people about the importance of gratitude, the power of believing in something bigger than themselves, and the amazing magic found in acts of giving.

Interview with Susan Justice

How can we use children’s literature to teach our kids about global issues and different cultures?

In our connected world, we must help our kids become global citizens who understand different cultures, global issues, and social responsibility. One engaging way to do this is through picture books, which can take young readers on adventures to far-off places and help them develop empathy and compassion for people from all walks of life. Children Who Dance in the Rain is an illustrated children’s book that brings readers to India and highlights differences in living conditions and the importance of gratitude and empathy.

Children Who Dance in the Rain follows a young girl’s journey to India, where she witnesses the challenges and triumphs of underprivileged children. The book explores themes like privilege, empathy, and interconnectedness, encouraging young readers to think about the good things in their lives and the importance of sharing with those in need. By showing kids the vast differences in living conditions worldwide, the story helps them develop a sense of social responsibility and a desire to make a positive impact.

Teaching kids about global issues helps them develop empathy and understanding for people from diverse backgrounds. Introducing them to social responsibility early on is important, empowering them to take action and create a more equal and just world. As global citizens, they’ll be better prepared to tackle pressing issues like poverty, climate change, and inequality, ultimately contributing to a more harmonious and inclusive global community.

How can we help our kids find a balance between technology and meaningful human connections?

In today’s world, technology is everywhere, and ensuring our kids strike the right balance between enjoying its benefits and maintaining meaningful human connections is essential. Children Who Dance in the Rain is a children’s book that sheds light on this topic, teaching important lessons about living in the moment.

The book tells the story of a girl’s trip to India, where she sees underprivileged kids finding joy in simple things like dancing in the rain. It’s a great reminder that the best moments in life often happen away from our screens, and kids should be encouraged to explore, play, and interact with others.

To help our children find the right balance, setting some boundaries and creating routines that focus on face-to-face interactions and real-life experiences is crucial. Think about having family dinners, outdoor adventures, and spending quality time together without screens dominating the scene. Kids will learn to value life’s moments and appreciate human connections by sparking their curiosity and wonder about the world.

Thank you for this interview, Gina Rae Mitchell! I’m genuinely grateful for the opportunity.
