Three women scheme to avenge an old friend in a darkly witty short story about loyalty, ambition, and delicious retribution by Margaret Atwood, the #1 bestselling author of The Handmaid’s Tale.
Myrna, Leonie, and Chrissy meet every Thursday to sample fine cheeses, to reminisce about their former lives as professors, and lately, to muse about murder. Decades ago, a vicious cabal of male poets contrived—quite publicly and successfully—to undermine the writing career, confidence, and health of their dear friend Fern. Now, after Fern has taken a turn for the worse, her three old friends decide that it’s finally time to strike back—in secret, of course, since Fern is far too gentle to approve of a vendetta. All they need is a plan with suitably Shakespearean drama. But as sweet and satisfying as revenge can be, it’s not always so cut and dried.

My thoughts on Cut and Thirst
Join Myrna, Leonie, and Chrissy for their weekly rendezvous filled with cheese, nostalgia, and contemplation of murder—yes, murder! In Margaret Atwood’s “Cut and Thirst,” these three retired professors hatch a plan to avenge their dear friend Fern against a cadre of male poets who once wreaked havoc on her life. But Fern is too gentle for such vengeance, so the scheme must be as clandestine as it is dramatic.
This tale serves up revenge with a side of Shakespearean flair, though as our trio discovers, vengeance isn’t always straightforward. Expect a dash of dark humor, especially if you’re prepared for the mishap involving ExLax-laced pot brownies!
This is one of those quick reads that you can put as much thought into as you wish. Be entertained for an hour, but ponder the deeper meanings for days.

Last Thoughts:
While I enjoyed this quick read, and I’ve been thinking about it for days, I was left wanting more. Part of me loved the simplicity of a friendship revenge mystery tale, while another part felt like this was just a chapter or two from a longer book. It made me want to know more, even if I had to make it up myself. If you are an Atwood fan, you’ll love it.
