My thoughts on Fool Her Once
Fool Her Once is the first book I’ve read by Joanna Elm. I found it intriguing, gripping, and slightly chilling.
The author created a true psychological noir thriller. The story has dark themes of cheating, murder, apathy, and the children of serial killers. Yet, it also includes strong concepts of family, responsible journalism, and moral issues.
The story opens slowly and builds to an incredible twisting reveal…in the middle of the book. From there the pace picks up as the reader races through the pages to discover what the author is going to come up with to top the bombshell. Don’t worry, Elm has so many more surprises to reveal.
I admit to needing to break out a notepad to keep the timelines straight in the beginning. Once I found myself caught up in the story, all the pieces began to fall into place, and I could not put the book down.
In typical noir fashion, the characters are flawed, real, and many times unlikeable, but so very memorable. This book would make a wonderful book club choice, as there are so many debatable choices, repercussions for actions, and thoughts of “what if”.
I recommend Fool Her Once to all lovers of intense psychological thrillers, well-told tales, and literary fiction.

About Joanna Elm
Joanna Elm is an author, journalist, blogger, and attorney. Before the publication of her first two suspense novels (Scandal, Tor/Forge 1996); (Delusion, Tor/Forge/1997), she was an investigative journalist on the London Evening News on Fleet Street in the U.K. She also wrote for British magazines like Woman’s Own.
Then, she moved to New York, where she worked as a writer/producer for television news and tabloid TV programs like "A Current Affair." She was also the researcher/writer for WNEW-TV’s Emmy-award-winning documentary "Irish Eyes." In 1980, she joined the Star as a reporter, eventually becoming the magazine’s news editor and managing editor before moving to Philadelphia as editor of the news/features section of TV Guide.
After completing her first two novels while living in South Florida, (Nelson DeMille described Scandal as “fresh, original and unpredictable”) Joanna returned to New York, enrolled in law school, graduated summa cum laude, passed the NY Bar exam, and worked as a principal law clerk for an appellate division justice in the prestigious First Department. She has been married to her husband Joe for 35 years and has one son.
