Every inch of kitchen counter space was in use. All five of us were busy measuring, stirring, rolling, sautéing and baking. There was flour and oil everywhere. And most of us were wearing some of it. No one was thinking about clean-up, as we were simply trying to get the meal done so we could finally sit down and eat.

As a wife, mom, and former corporate go-getter, Cheryl knows firsthand the frustration of trying to do it all and feeling that none of it is good enough. As the world slowed down for a global pandemic, Cheryl inspected her own life and who she wanted to become who she needed to become-to serve at her highest level. Much of this discovery occurred in the kitchen during playful evenings side-by-side with her sons, husband, and mother. Their time together led Cheryl to realize that how you measure your priorities, mix them in with your life experiences, and marinate on and adjust to the results determines the direction of your life

My thoughts on Measure Mix & Marinate

Measure Mix & Marinate is a book best read slowly while relaxing so you can think about the words on the pages. There is a lot to absorb in this non-fiction inspirational book.

As our lives become more frantic, especially during the pandemic, we need all the tips and tricks we can find to help navigate the treacherous waters. Cheryl Schumberth has a calming influence on a person with her writing style. She lets you know she’s just like you, struggling to find the way.

The recipes are an added bonus to the motivational guidance found in the book.

I think everyone could benefit from reading Measure Mix & Marinate. It’s a relatively short book that packs a powerful punch.

A Few Words from Cheryl

What made you write a book about cooking with your kids?

I’d known for a few years that I’d wanted to write a book, but didn’t know what I wanted to write about. When the world shut down last year, my family started a weekly activity making dinner from a different culture each week. As I posted our results on social media, a friend of my husband’s suggested I write a book, and the idea was planted.

How did your kids feel about being characters in your book?

They didn’t have a strong opinion about it. They know I’m active on social media and already shared some things about them so publishing a book with them in it wasn’t new. My oldest wasn’t overly excited about a couple of the photos I was planning to use, like the one with the onion goggles, but after reading the book he seemed to appreciate the whole idea more.

How long have you been writing?

Formally, since June 2020, but I’ve always enjoyed being creative with words. I wrote poetry when I was in my early teens as a way to release the middle school tension but that was a method of journaling more than creating something to be shared.

What is the last great book you’ve read?

I can’t say it’s the last great book, but The Language of Flowers, by Vanessa Diffenbaugh has a special place in my heart. Although my situation was never as tough as the main character’s was, I genuinely felt her pain and her triumph and love how the beauty and uniqueness of flowers were her strongest form of communication.

If you could go back in time, where would you go?

I’m a very logical and data-driven person, so when I think about some of the interesting time periods I’d like to experience, the Renaissance, for example, I also think about what it would be like to live during that time. Things like what diseases and hardships people dealt with and what it would be like to be a woman during that time. Maybe that makes me a non-romantic.

With that, I think I’d like to be a mom in the 1980s. We had some technical advances and luxuries but they didn’t consume us. We had one to two TVs in the house and family time was more casual because we were more present in the same place physically and emotionally. The face-to-face connection was still a core part of how we lived.
