She finds her answer, which takes her and a close-knit coterie of women to the edge of the cosmos-and the core of their own hearts.
Based on a true story.

Excerpt from My Dead True Love

We stood a moment without speaking—sizing each other up, I suppose—before I invited her to have a seat on the couch. I sat down next to her.

“Look, I know this situation is awkward,” I began. “Me the fiancée, you the ex-wife…”

“Yeah, I can only imagine what he’s said about me. Medusa unbound.”

“Oh no, that’s not what I meant.…”

I tripped over my words.

“But it’s very likely what he meant.” She let out a belly laugh.

Bunching up her considerable green velvet skirt, she stretched out her legs, revealing black cowboy boots.

“Ours was not a friendly parting.”

“I gathered,” I said. “I also know you were married for, like, ten years—double the time I knew him. And I know I ought to feel jealous…”

Elizabeth stared at me, waiting.

“But I don’t.”

“No?”

“No. You were close to him. He was close to you.” I paused. It was difficult, even counterintuitive, what I was trying to say. “I could hear this in the intimate way you talked about him at the service.”

I clasped my hands as my words spilled out haltingly.

“I don’t even know how to say this,” I continued, “but I understood. It’s not like you’re a rival. You’re more like a sister. Or something like that. Someone I have a common bond with. He’s gone, and the hurt of that…”

I looked away. Tears were percolating up, boiling over again. Would this fountain of grief never cease?

I rushed to add, “The hurt of that doesn’t leave room for trivial bullshit like jealousy.” There, I’d said it. My heart was pounding.

“We… shared… him. Like no one else can understand.”

Someone understands.

My Take on Writers Groups by Kim Pierce

When an instructor in one of my writing classes talked about his writers group, it sounded almost mystical. The authors had been together something like twenty years, and even when they lived in different cities, they still got together on something like Zoom calls. This was long before the pandemic.

I didn’t understand their closeness and commitment until I was lucky enough to land in a group that included a magazine editor I’d worked closely with, a writer/editor I’d known since my early days at the Dallas Morning News, and the restaurant critic of a local magazine who was also a former teacher.

Dubbed Women Who Write by one our members, we’d meet every week or so. We were all non-fiction professionals writing fiction. First we used a nifty shared conference room workspace. Then when COVID forced cutbacks, we switched to each other’s homes. We’d bring food— nothing fancy, just a soup here or some bread or cheese there—and perhaps some wine. First we’d eat and catch up.

Then we’d pull out the pages submitted for that evening. (These would have been emailed before the meeting.) Usually, it’d be a chapter. But sometimes it might be a shorter vignette, maybe trying something new, or just a character sketch.

These got broken down and discussed, but in the kindest of ways. There were no prima donnas or egoists elbowing for dominance. We’d discuss what worked, what didn’t, what was difficult to understand, what really clicked.

I learned humility in this group. But also, I developed a pretty thick skin. There were times I thought I’d nailed a chapter or passage, and gently, persuasively the group would dissect the writing and show where and how it could be improved. I’d go back to my keyboard and incorporate what fit. Then, we’d start the process all over again.

The group went through changes over the many years we met regularly. One writer turned out two manuscripts. Another is still working on her first—a long historical novel that just keeps getting better. I was there for one book, so when I was done, I was done. But I still attend meetings and offer feedback on others’ writing. One of our number shifted career gears and moved to Paris, France. We try to Zoom her in.

I can honestly say my book wouldn’t be what it is today without this amazing group of women. It was like having three best-ever editors who were unstinting in their observations, but respectful and kind. And yeah, it was almost mystical.
