Review: Nokomis Hospital by Jay B. Greene | A Gritty Medical Corruption Thriller Rooted in Investigative Journalism
What begins as a medical emergency quickly spirals into a gritty investigation filled with corruption, greed, and dangerous secrets. Nokomis Hospital blends the tension of a medical thriller with the hard-edged atmosphere of investigative journalism, creating a story that feels unsettlingly realistic from beginning to end.
Healthcare fraud isn't just about money-it's about people.
Some stories gently ease the reader into the plot. This one throws you directly into the chaos and keeps the pressure building from there. What I expected to be a straightforward medical thriller became something much deeper - a tense story about whistleblowers, corruption, power, and the risks people take to uncover the truth.
In this review, I share what worked for me, where the story stands out, and why readers who enjoy gritty investigative thrillers may want to add this one to their reading list.

Why This Book Stands Out
Jay B. Greene brings decades of investigative journalism experience into this story, and it shows. The hospital corruption, financial fraud, and whistleblower risks feel grounded in reality rather than exaggerated for shock value, giving the novel a stronger emotional impact than many traditional medical thrillers.
With that in mind, this is where the writing stands out.
My Thoughts
Nokomis Hospital surprised me in the best way. I expected a medical thriller, but Jay B. Greene delivers something broader and grittier: a story about healthcare corruption, investigative reporting, whistleblowers, and the very real human cost of greed.
The 1980s Florida setting gives the story a grounded, slightly old-school feel that works well with Jack Kendall's role as a reporter. There is a strong detective-style rhythm to the investigation, but the book never loses sight of the hospital setting or the patients affected by the decisions being made behind closed doors.
The antagonists are truly deplorable, which makes the good characters very easy to root for. Nicole McIntosh and Terry Myles bring courage and tension to the whistleblower side of the story, while Jack's personal connection through Bobbie raises the stakes from professional curiosity to something much more urgent.
The story flows smoothly overall, especially with the dated chapter headings helping keep the timeline clear. There were a few places where the writing became a bit wordier than I needed, but the realism, strong character work, and steady tension kept me invested.
I also enjoyed what felt like a playful nod to classic television in a few of the character names. A Mason, Della, and Paul pairing immediately made me think of Perry Mason, and a prison warden named Ward Cleaver felt like a wink to readers familiar with older TV. Whether intentional or not, it added a small extra layer of fun for me.

In Conclusion
Nokomis Hospital is a gritty, realistic medical corruption thriller with strong investigative roots and a clear sense of moral urgency. It works as a standalone, though readers who enjoy Jack Kendall will likely want to go back and read the earlier books in the series.
Jay B. Greene writes with the confidence of someone who understands both journalism and the systems he is questioning. The result is a tense, thoughtful mystery about power, fraud, and the people brave enough to challenge both.
