Review: Carl Goes to Mouse World Is a delightful book that children will enjoy. But I think adults will love it even more, as they will catch all the innuendo about “Mouse World.” The book is ultimately about friendship, family, and acceptance.

Meet RJ Richards

Review: Carl Goes to Mouse World by RJ Richards Author Photo

RJ graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Politics, Economics, and Philosophy. He served four years in the United States Navy and has worked in various capacities with the United States government. RJ is an avid sports fan who loves the New York Yankees and Dallas Cowboys. RJ is a Christian, husband, and father, currently living in the Midwest.

Get to know RJ Richards:

How long have you been writing?

I have been writing for nearly 30 years in one form or another. This is the first time I have published my work.

How do you choose your character names?

I tried to name many of the characters after people or animals that I either know or have known.

What inspired you to write in this genre?

I just always wanted to write a children’s book. I didn’t want to go the picture book route, but write something that a middle-grade reader could handle, but still pick up again as an adult and enjoy.

If an author fictionalized your life, in which genre would the story belong?

I love this question. I think whatever genre One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest would fit in.

Do you have a set writing schedule?

With Carl, I just tried to write every day. Preferably, I would write in the am, but that wasn’t the law. The main thing was writing every day. Whether that was one paragraph or three pages, I made it a point to write something every day. I might take Sunday off, but other than that, I would try to put something on paper every single day.

Do you need silence to write, or can you work in any environment?

I prefer silence, but I am able to write with background noise just fine. When it was time to review and proof, I liked to have a quiet early morning, but the actual writing process could be done in a more active environment.

If you could set up your perfect writing scenario, what would it involve?

Great question and one I have thought about before. I think ideally, if you could set up shop in the exact area that your subject matter centers around. For Carl, my home was fine, as I had a cat. But if I were writing about subject matter centered in New York City, I would want to be in a coffee shop, hotel, or other location in NYC. Of course, the whole quiet cabin with a fireplace sounds good, too, but I would probably just take a nap.

What is your most unusual writing quirk?

Probably, I have way too much going on in my mind while writing. I might get concerned about a baseball score while writing and have to check my phone. I  create way too many distractions for myself while I’m actually writing.

Do you usually arrive early, on time, or late?

Early in most cases.

If you could form the ultimate writer’s group, which authors past or present would you invite to join you?

Jeff Pearlman, who does a great job with his sports topics. We would probably fight over politics, but the guy is a brilliant sports writer. David McCullough for his ability to make history flow. Laura Ingalls Wilder would be interesting. I really would want people who didn’t over complicate a story. If you are getting people to turn the page, you are doing something right.

Do you have a favorite snack or beverage while you are writing?

Coffee is a must, but Peppermint hot chocolate does the trick too. I wish there were a way to make popcorn a better “writing snack,” but I just haven’t figured out how to do that.

Which three words best describe you?

Hard working (Ok, maybe two words there), opinionated, and has a sense of humor.

Is there anything you would like my readers to know about you and your book?

I would ask that people give it a shot. I wanted to write something positive, as we have way too much negative in this world, and I wanted to highlight friendship and family. We only have one family, and we only have so many good friends during our life, and I wanted to highlight that. Carl Goes to Mouse World isn’t going to change your life, but I hope it allows you to take a break from your life and maybe, just maybe, help you reflect on the things that matter.

I could sure use reviews on Amazon and Goodreads, so if you enjoy the book and have time, please consider giving me a review.

Thank you for your support. I’m going to start a second project soon, and these resources are a great way to receive updates.

No matter where you acquire the books you read, please leave a review. Amazon and Goodreads are the most popular places, and you don’t have to own the book to review it. A review doesn’t have to be fancy or in-depth, a simple “Thumbs up. I liked this book.” will help the author immensely.
