Haldor Falk, fierce warrior and powerful vitki blessed by the Goddess Freyja with the extraordinary ability to transform into a falcon, has been charged with forging Skjöld, grandson of King Harald Bluetooth, into a rugged warlord in the wild north of Norway.

With his acolyte’s training now complete, Haldor intends to return to the Viking stronghold of Normandy. But when a vision reveals an imminent attack on a dwarf guarding a hidden treasure trove in a secret cave, Haldor and Skjöld gain Dwarven-forged weapons and an unexpected, invaluable ally.

Úlvhild, a völva of formidable seiðr magic and Haldor’s lover of nearly twenty winters, foresees that the Dökkálfar Dark Elves will strike to prevent the fulfillment of a prophecy. When the Norns unveil the terrible price of her fate, Úlvhild must confront a crimson-eyed witch to save her beloved falcon and ensure that the prophesied Son of the Dragon fulfills his destined path.

Falcon of the Faroe Islands is the sweeping, epic conclusion to the award-winning Valiant Vikings trilogy set in tenth century Normandy.

A sizzling blend of historical fiction, paranormal fantasy, Norse mythology, and steamy Viking romance!

Review at a Glance

Genre Paranormal Historical Romance
Setting Tenth Century Normandy and Northern Norway
Length 461 pages
Content Rating Steamy (open-door romance)
My Rating ⭐⭐⭐⭐½ (4.5 stars)
Quick Take A sweeping Viking romance layered with Norse mythology, vivid historical detail, and a powerful sense of destiny.

Content Considerations

  • Open-door romance scenes
  • Battle violence
  • Pagan/Norse spiritual practices and magic

I personally skimmed some of the more explicit romantic scenes, but the strength of the story, character arcs, and historical immersion made this an excellent read overall.

Now for a closer look at what made this story stand out.

My Thoughts

Falcon of the Faroe Islands brings Jennifer Ivy Walker's Valiant Vikings trilogy to a sweeping and emotionally satisfying conclusion. Set in tenth century Normandy and the rugged north of Norway, this final installment blends magic, prophecy, warfare, gods, and romance into a richly layered Viking epic.

Walker's research background shines throughout the novel. The historical details feel authentic and grounded, yet never overwhelm the narrative. From fjords and longships to political alliances and ritual magic, the world-building is vivid and cinematic. You can feel the wind off the sea and the weight of destiny pressing against each choice.

Haldor Falk remains a compelling hero - a fierce warrior gifted with the extraordinary ability to transform into a falcon. His relationship with Úlvhild, a powerful völva skilled in seiðr magic, anchors the story emotionally. (For readers unfamiliar with the term, a völva was a respected and often feared seeress in Viking Age society who practiced seiðr - a form of magic used for prophecy, healing, and influencing fate.)

The romantic elements are undeniably steamy. While I chose to skim some of the more heated scenes, the overarching story - with its themes of destiny, sacrifice, loyalty, and legacy - carried the novel beautifully. The integration of Norse mythology with historical fiction creates a dramatic and immersive reading experience.

Having previously reviewed Dragon of Denmark and Wolf of the Nordic Seas, I appreciated seeing the trilogy's arc brought to its epic conclusion. Longtime readers will find this finale intense, mythic, and ultimately rewarding.

Excerpt

To give you a feel for the novel's tone, here is a brief excerpt from Falcon of the Faroe Islands.

She glanced over at Haldor, the sharp scrape of his knife echoing against the stones as he skinned and cleaned the six white hares he'd caught this morning.
His dark brown locks and beard were threaded with the first hints of silver, and the thick fur of the heavy reindeer hide he wore-much warmer and more suited to the bitter cold of northern Norway than his falcon cloak-ruffled in the gusty wind. Although nearly forty winters, like Úlvhild herself, he still bore the strength of a seasoned warrior, skilled with axe, spear, and sword.

O, Freyja…how I love him.

These past few weeks had been the happiest of her life. Úlvhild could almost believe they might stay here forever, hidden from the world, in the Dragon's Leap cave atop Vågakallen mountain.

But she knew that was impossible.

Haldor needed an heir. And though he would not leave her side throughout the long winter, he would have to send the Blóðsmiðr to carry the message to Sigurd by the winter solstice.

That Haldor would accept the offer.

And take Svanhild to wife.

Though grief clenched her heart and stole her breath, Úlvhild knew it had to be. She'd foreseen that Svanhild would bear five sons. Haldor's heirs would become jarls of the Faroe Islands, forming powerful Norse alliances with Jarl Sigurd, Sweyn Forkbeard, and Jarl Rikard.

In the spring, Haldor would sail to Sigurðshöll to marry Svanhild.

And Úlvhild would return to the Pays de Caux. With Skjöld.

She watched him skin the hares, the white fur pelts yielding as easily to his skilled touch as her own body did inside the cave.

Freyja had told Haldor that making love to Úlvhild-pouring seiðr magic into her with his seed-was the best way to restore her strength and spirit.

And so, every night-and most mornings, too-Haldor made Úlvhild's body sing and her spirit soar… like a falcon taking flight.
