My review of The Underground Toy Society series: Five Of Five Stars
Jessica D. Adams has a written a fabulous series of children’s books. They list for grades 2-4, but I believe kids of any age will enjoy & learn from these books. My grandchildren ages 2 – 10 and I love reading them together. I know some adults that need reintroducing to the concept of caring for your things. Each book in the series plays on the same theme. The children will love the recurring characters.
Ms. Adams daughters illustrate the books. What a lovely project to bond over and to instill a love of reading, writing, and drawing in the next generation.
The Underground Toy Society is a wonderful series of books
I can with all sincerity recommend this series of children’s books. They make great gifts for any occasion. There is nothing better than an entertaining children’s book with a subtle message included. Each book can be a conversation starter to teach valuable lessons to all.

About Jessica D. Adams
Jessica D. Adams writes children’s books about The Underground Toy Society that aim to teach children to love and appreciate what they have, think of others, and hopefully clean their rooms. Jessica’s two daughters are the inspiration for the books, as well as co-illustrators for many of the books. Jessica also wrote a short time travel chapter book, Meeting Grandmom, which is a great story for kids as well as adults to remember or talk about lost loved ones and family history.
The Underground Toy Society series is perfect for gift-giving!
Jessica has visions of The Underground Toy Society traveling around the world, with many books being created to help teach children to clean their rooms, appreciate what they have and think of those who may not have as much. While the goals of the books are to help kids want to clean their rooms, appreciate what they have, and think of others, there are no guarantees that kids will learn these lessons. These books are for entertainment purposes, and individual results may vary.
Interview with Jessica D. Adams
How long have you been writing?
I have been writing short stories ever since I was a little girl. I used to take in short little stories for show and tell when I was in 1st grade. I started to write with the idea of publishing in mind around 2014, but I don’t exactly remember. My first book was officially published on June 8, 2015.
What inspired you to write in this genre?
The first inspiration came from my mom when I was little. When I was worried that my sister’s toys and my toys would miss each other when we grew up, she told me not to worry because the toys would find each other. We came up with The Underground Toy Society’s name at that time. The next inspiration was when an author, Laura Jane Coats, visited my elementary school when I was in 6th grade. I thought it would be neat if I could someday write about The Underground Toy Society. My final inspiration and ultimate push to write my stories was when my two daughters were receiving so many toys that they didn’t seem to appreciate. They had way too many toys and wouldn’t keep them cleaned up. I decided The Underground Toy Society needed to help.
Which genre would your story belong in if your life was fictionalized?
A children’s book ?
Do you have a set writing schedule?
Nope.
Do you need silence to write or can you work in any environment?
I typically like silence, but if I have a really good idea, I can keep writing through some background noises.
Were you an avid reader growing up?
Not really. I loved going to the library when I was in elementary school, but once I passed that stage, I didn’t really read all that much. I honestly think that school stifled my love of reading because I hated to be forced to read something. I read what I had to read for school and then after that didn’t want to read anything else. I guess reading became a chore and when I was done with school work, I was done reading too.
If you could form the ultimate writers’ group, which authors past or present would you invite to join you?
Jan and Stan Berenstain, Laura Jane Coats, Don Freeman, Ann M. Martin.
What is your go-to snack food and do you snack while writing?
Chocolate is my favorite. I also like pretzels. Yes, I snack while writing.
Who has influenced your writing the most?
I guess I would have to say my husband because if he wouldn’t have encouraged me to stop worrying and to write my stories, I wouldn’t have eight books published.
Must you wear shoes to write?
Nope. It’s actually the opposite. I like to have my shoes off while inside my house, which is where I write.
How does The Underground Toy Society help parents?
The Underground Toy Society helps parents by teaching their kids that toys would rather be loved and cared for instead of all over the floor.
How does The Underground Toy Society help kids?
The Underground Toy Society helps kids learn to be responsible, think of others, help others, and appreciate what they have.
How can parents use these books to help their kids?
I often see parents resort to threatening kids with a garbage bag. They tell their kids if they don’t clean up, their toys will be thrown away. Why not give the toys a say? Tell the kids the toys don’t like to be forgotten and not loved. If the toys aren’t happy, they might leave to find help at The Underground Toy Society, where lost, lonely, and forgotten toys go to find new homes. If kids don’t want to see their toys leave, they will have to clean up their toys. If they still do not clean up, the toys will leave. This is where parents can then take the toys and either hide them or donate them.
How can parents use these books to help declutter their homes?
If kids learn to think of others who are not as fortunate, they may be more inclined to give some of their toys away that they no longer need or play with. This will help the kids keep their rooms cleaner with less items cluttering up their rooms.
